Economic stimulus package, School assignment plans, Prayer in the voting booth

By Theresa Camoriano

1.                 Economic stimulus package – If the way to improve the economy really is to take money from some people and give it to others so they can spend it, then I am willing to be part of the solution  -- namely, the part on the receiving end of the money.  Instead of wasting time distributing money to millions of people who might not even know how to use it properly, Uncle Sam can just write a single check to me!  I promise I won’t do anything silly with it, like save or invest; I promise to spend, spend, spend!  If he gives me enough money, I will build two bridges across the Ohio River, employing lots of people and improving transportation in the process.  I will build arenas, shopping malls and houses, and I will take thousands of people on a trip around the country, eating out, staying in hotels and buying clothing.  It will be a blast, and just think of all the economic stimulus it will provide!  (Just don’t blame me when it comes time to pay the bills.)

2.                 School assignment plans – Louisville finally has come up with a new school assignment plan that is intended to satisfy the Supreme Court while still achieving the goal of racial diversity. Of course, there is no data to suggest that a black student learns better when seated next to a white student or that a poor student learns better when seated next to a rich student, so there is no educational reason for this preoccupation with achieving “diversity”.   Just imagine what the education establishment might accomplish if it put its resources into educating children rather than into social engineering.

3.                 Prayer in the voting booth – The first time I had the opportunity to vote, I voted for Richard Nixon, so surely I can’t do worse than that again, right?  In my lifetime, we have survived the unwise policies of LBJ, Ford, Carter, and the elder and younger Bushes, so surely we will survive whoever gets elected president this time – won’t we?  This whole primary business may be a very entertaining reality TV show, but I find it quite depressing, knowing that, in the end, one of those people actually will become the President of the United States. If ever there were a need for a combination of church and state, it is now.  Please pray for the future of this country when you go into the voting booth – we definitely need some divine intervention!
