Pride, Discrimination, and Fred Thompson By Theresa Camoriano
Pride - Lately, I am wondering what has happened to pride. Taking pride in your work and your achievements is a good thing, particularly if it spurs you to do good work and to have respect for yourself. Taking pride in your country, your family, and your community is also a good thing if it makes you appreciate their good qualities and want to improve them. Unfortunately, it seems that many young people care little about the quality of the work they perform, taking no pride in it at all. Many people condemn America for its bad points, completely ignoring all its wonderful achievements and characteristics.
I suspect that our schools’ teaching that discrimination is a bad thing and that all cultures and countries are equal, and their promotion of self-esteem over achievement have caused this loss of pride. Why strive to do your best if nothing is better than anything else? I want our young people to get back their pride. They need it, and we need them to have it.
Discrimination can be a good thing – It used to be considered good to have discriminating taste. Unfortunately, now the word “discrimination” has become so closely associated with bigotry that it is considered always to be bad. But being free to make choices (to discriminate) is very important. I have been intending to write about the importance of people being free to use their property as they choose and to associate with whomever they choose, but I just read an article that said what I have been intending to say. I hope you will read it. http://www.newswithviews.com/Turtel/joel52.htm
Is Fred Thompson finally getting moving? – After many people had written off Fred Thompson’s candidacy, is he finally getting onto the radar screen? I certainly hope so. We need a president who will consistently respect people’s private property, who respects the importance of federalism, and who understands the importance of freedom. We need someone who can unite fiscal conservatives and social conservatives and who has a temperament that would allow him to be trusted with the reins of power. Many people say Thompson won the South Carolina debate. He has been endorsed by “Human Events” newspaper, by many pro-life organizations, and many others. For the sake of our country, I hope his campaign gets moving now. He may not be exciting, but we don’t need exciting – we need someone who knows what he is doing and who will move the country in the right direction.
