"[I]f you serve a child a rotten hamburger in America, federal, state, and local agencies will investigate you, summon you, close you down, whatever.  But if you provide a child with a rotten education, nothing happens, except that you're liable to be given more money to do it with."

--Ronald Reagan

“Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.” - Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1870-1924)

While Gore was creating alarm with his belief that a 20-foot-high wall of water would inundate low-lying cities, the IPCC showed us we should realistically prepare for a rise of one foot or so by the end of the century. Beyond the dramatic difference, it is also worth putting that one foot in perspective. Over the last 150 years, sea levels rose about one foot - yet, did we notice? – Bjorn Lomborg

Extreme Home Makeover, Lost Jobs in Kentucky, Anti-Harassment Policy, Coin Toss, and Happy Thanksgiving!            By Theresa Camoriano

1.  Extreme Home Makeover Project in Louisville – This project, which built a house for Patrick Henry Hughes and his family, is an example of the miracle of freedom.  In one week, local people, donating time, equipment, and materials, knocked down the family’s old house and built them a beautiful, new house, complete with a handicapped-accessible in-ground pool and a wing for Patrick that allows him to use voice commands to lock the doors and even provide music!  The whole community has been excited about this project, from the neighbors, who didn’t complain about the 24-hour construction schedule, to those who just watched and cheered from the sidelines.  The joy and sense of achievement have been wonderful.         (click to read more)

CATS in Decline: Federal Yardstick Reveals Kentucky’s Education Testing Program Continues to Deteriorate   Executive summary

Ever since the implementation of Kentucky’s Commonwealth Accountability Testing System, known as the CATS, researchers have wondered if students were really doing better, or if the grading standards were simply getting easier.

Certainly, the new CATS results for 2007 show serious signs of inflation. There are extremely large differences in 2007 proficiency rates reported by the CATS’ individual academic subjects compared to proficiency rates reported by the National Assessment of Educational Progress – a highly regarded federal testing program. 1         (click to read more)

Veteran’s Day Speech  [delivered November 12that Bryan Station High School, Lexington, KY]

Jeff Smith, Veteran

Sometimes we don’t give young people enough credit. The USAF ROTC Cadets at Bryan Station High School and their instructor, Colonel Greg Coker, took it upon themselves to organize and lead a flag raising and Veteran’s Day Observance at the school soccer / football field where an empty flagpole sent the wrong message to patriotic Americans who entered that stadium supporting the sporting events.          (click to read more)

Commish Search II: The Sequel            By Jim Waters

Al Smith, longtime host of “Comment on Kentucky,” urged the Kentucky Board of Education to wait and conduct a national search for a new education commissioner – like other states do.

Gov.-elect Steve Beshear also requested the board to take some more time.          (click to read more)

The Social Security Nightmare        By: Michael A. Minton

In 1950, there were 16 workers to support every one person that drew a Social Security check. Currently, there are 3.3 workers supporting every one person drawing Social Security. And by the time our youngest workers reach retirement age, that ratio will have dropped to 2:1. It is a dismal looking picture at best.         (click to read more)

Evolution of a revolution           By Jim Waters

“Ronald Reagan’s Journey: Democrat to Republican” (Rowman & Littlefield, June 2006) reminds us that the “Reagan Revolution” did not begin when the nation’s 40th president took the oath of office on January 20, 1981.

Rather, the “revolution” represented the evolution of a man who believed individual Americans and their nation faced a journey toward a divine destiny.          (click to read more)

Unless and until Congress stops prattling about presidential "usurpation" of power and asserts its own, it will remain derelict regarding its duty of mutual participation in warmaking. And it will merit its current marginalization. – George Will

Free State Project

The organization [Amnesty International], which opposes the death penalty, has created an odd disjunction: life is so precious that even a murderer must be saved, but an unborn child is so unimportant that he may be killed.  Doug Bandow

"The president of Iran gave a speech in New York City... and thousands of New Yorkers are really upset about it. The New Yorkers said, 'If we want to hear a short-tempered Iranian man yell at us, we'll take a cab'." ---Conan O'Brien

Study after study has shown that housing prices are highest where government restrictions on building are the most severe. That is the ugly result of pretty words like "open space." Thomas Sowell
