McConnell Issues Video Response to SCHIP Critics

McConnell Supports Reauthorizing State Children’s Health Insurance Program

            Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell today issued a video response on his blog at www.teammitch.com/blog to those who have been critical of his work on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Senator McConnell states in the video:

“I strongly support protecting SCHIP and helping Kentucky’s children. However what some propose is expanding SCHIP to cover families who make more than $80,000 per year.  Incredibly some would even have adults utilize this program at the expense of the children it was designed to serve. 

While Kentucky operates a responsible program, a number of other states have exploited loopholes to use their children’s health funds on adults. Remember: SCHIP was meant to protect low-income children – not as a back-door means to accomplish government-run health care.

There is a lot of good in the current SCHIP law that we should reauthorize.  But at the same time, we should also look for ways to improve it. The time for political posturing is past.

Congress must get serious about passing a responsible SCHIP reauthorization bill that makes sure low-income children get the health care they deserve.”
