“[State controlled] education is a weapon, whose effect depends on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.” – Joseph Stalin

"[I]f you serve a child a rotten hamburger in America, federal, state, and local agencies will investigate you, summon you, close you down, whatever.  But if you provide a child with a rotten education, nothing happens, except that you're liable to be given more money to do it with."

--Ronald Reagan

“Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.” - Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1870-1924)

The impossibility of any individual or small group conceiving of all the possibilities, let alone evaluating their merits, is the great argument against central governmental planning and against arrangements such as professional monopolies that limit the possibilities of experimentation. — Milton Friedman

It Just Doesn’t Make Sense To Me – School Assignment Discrimination, Free Speech, and Global Warming          By Theresa Camoriano

These days, there are lots of things in the public arena that just don’t make sense to me.  Here are some of them:

1.       School assignment discrimination? -- The same people who have been saying for the past forty or fifty years that we should not discriminate on the basis of race now are very upset that the Supreme Court has said it is unconstitutional for Louisville’s school district to discriminate on the basis of race when assigning students to schools.  Didn’t they just get what they wanted?  If so, why are they so upset?         (click to read more)

The entrepreneurial vocation            By Rev. Robert A. Sirico

One may say, without fear of contradiction, that prejudice against minorities is unpopular in modern society. And with good reason: the idea that people are judged merely by the group that they happen to belong to, without any regard for their person or individual qualities, is properly odious to anyone with moral sensibilities.

Yet despite this laudable attitude prevalent throughout the popular culture, there remains one minority group upon which an unofficial open season has been declared: the entrepreneur.          (click to read more)

Incentives for coal liquification won’t relieve gas pains           By Jim Waters

All this talk about taxpayer-funded subsidies for private companies to try for the umpteenth time to turn coal into oil and tick off the Arabs continues to sap my energy.

We’ve got politicians and bureaucrats rushing to embrace this folly faster than convenience-store clerks change the cost of unleaded premium on the signs outside their stores.          (click to read more)

What it Means to Be an American         By Gordon Francis Corbett

I am proud to be an American.

Being an American does not mean living in a geographical area called the United States.  It means living heedless of the rich and fearless of the powerful.  It means living confident of being free to attain one's goals;  to keep one's earnings;  and to speak one's mind, all without violating the rights of others.  It means living with one's rights secure, protected by paid public guardians Constitutionally limited to that task alone.         (click to read more)

Education commissioner missed lesson on telling the truth          By Jim Waters

I bet the Kentucky Board of Education hopes the flap over Education Commissioner Barbara Erwin goes away.

It won’t, and it shouldn’t.

After all, how many companies would tolerate someone misrepresenting his or her career on a mistake-ridden resume in order to secure a job with a salary higher than the governor’s?          (click to read more)

Too much democracy?          by Henry Lamb

Is it possible? Is it really possible to have too much democracy? Isn't democracy what the war in Iraq is about? Isn't democracy what all previous wars were about? How, then, can it be possible to have too much democracy?

If you're the only sheep among a group of wolves voting on what to have for dinner, you might want some limitation on democracy.          (click to read more)

Feds should deny KDE request to delay NCLB scores

Kentucky’s education bureaucracy again wants to deny parents and students education choices.

The Kentucky Department of Education wants to release No Child Left Behind (NCLB) scores late this year. Federal officials, who must approve such requests, should just say “no.”         (click to read more)

Removing partisan politics from the Office of Kentucky’s Attorney General           By: Stan Lee, Republican Nominee for Attorney General

For far too long, the Office of Attorney General has been plagued by partisan politics and has failed to solve everyday problems.  We have seen political posturing, maneuvering, and a greater concern placed on future campaigns than on Kentucky’s future.

As Kentucky’s next Attorney General, I will restore integrity to the Office and will work to move this state forward on a multitude of important issues.  Kentuckians deserve more from this Office, and I will work diligently to restore confidence by solving real problems.  No longer should this Office be used as a political launching pad for politicians to manipulate the public in an effort to launch campaigns for future offices.  Kentuckians understand that we have serious problems that must be tackled, and I believe my candidacy provides the best chance to solve the ills that weigh us down.           (click to read more)

Why, one might wonder, is there such insistence on scientific unanimity on the warming issue? After all, unanimity in science is virtually nonexistent on far less complex matters. Unanimity on an issue as uncertain as "global warming'' would be surprising and suspicious. Moreover, why are the opinions of scientists sought regardless of their field of expertise? Biologists and physicians are rarely asked to endorse some theory in high energy physics. Apparently, when one comes to "global warming,'' any scientist's agreement will do. Richard Lindzen

Those who voluntarily put power into the hands of a tyrant or an enemy, must not wonder if it be at last turned against themselves. — Aesop

Any bimbo who exposes her body can get more attention than someone who finds ways to reduce the cost of housing for millions of people. – Thomas Sowell

The act of reaching into one's own pockets to help a fellow man in need is praiseworthy and laudable. Reaching into someone else's pocket is despicable and worthy of condemnation. – Walter Williams

"Discussion of issues cannot be suppressed simply because the issues may also be pertinent in an election…  Thus, "we reject the contention that issue advocacy may be regulated because express election advocacy may be."  - Chief Justice Roberts
