Want Freedom? Strive to make politicians miserable!

by Donna Mancini

“You don’t combat an evil by adopting it and practicing it.”

- Ayn Rand

I have been involved in the Libertarian Party for roughly eleven years now, and I have come to believe that The Libertarian “Party” is an oxy-moron.

I think our philosophy of non-aggression is the answer to all of the world’s problems; and, I am proud to call myself a Libertarian. I enthusiastically support our activists and the “cause,” but I question the logic of being a political party and running candidates.

We Libertarians, for the most part, loathe government. In principle we do not want to assume power over other people and make arbitrary rules that we know are for no other purpose than to control people and extract their cold hard cash. We are a peaceful group who just want to mind our own business and live and let live. We like to teach and persuade others to accept our ideas; and, encourage people to think for themselves. We don’t go to government and ask that laws be passed to force others to live according to our whims. We work hard for our money and we do not believe the “world owes us a living!” Libertarians make great friends and neighbors. Libertarians don’t meddle in their neighbors’ lives nor try to confiscate the property of others. Libertarians do not kill people for the fun of it. We advise making LOVE, not WAR.

Now as for myself, I have been a Libertarian candidate four times, and truthfully, I felt totally out of place. Why was I trying to become part of the government which I so much abhor? At first I was convinced I was helping restore freedom in America and advancing the Libertarian cause. However, later on I realized I could never be a part of the political elite as I despise everything about government and politics. Coupled with no respect for so-called authority, statist institutions, silly rules, procedures and conforming to “society” etc, ad nauseum - I WAS out of place. Surely there are other, less painful ways for me, and others like me, to help bring liberty and free markets to the world before we leave this earth.

Also, I don’t think a few Libertarian politicians on the “inside” are likely to bring liberty to the masses. I think the masses on the outside need to get the politicos on the inside to behave themselves and better yet - quit and Go HOME!

I think the LP should stop using our limited resources on campaigns and lobbying government and focus on selling the benefits of freedom, personal and economic, directly to the American people. We should be trying our best, as many already are, to get the public to wake up and realize that “force” is inherently evil; and the government is a bully, just like the mob, that steals their money and property, puts them in harm’s way by policing the world, starting wars, and thus creating enemies around the globe. And if that isn’t bad enough, the government nannies at home demand large chunks of our hard earned money and order us around like little children, as they attempt to make us safe and secure from the womb to the tomb. In reality, this “protection” prevents us from pursuing our own goals and living according to our individual tastes and beliefs!

To quote the late and great Harry Browne, “Government doesn’t work!” In my own words - we are being SCREWED.

Thus, it is our job as Libertarians to get people to reject government “solutions” and embrace voluntary co-operation. We should boldly acknowledge self-ownership and demand our inherent human rights to life, liberty, property and the peaceful pursuit of happiness any way we damn-well please.

In short, just say no to Big Government!

Let’s lead by example by whining and complaining to our so-called representatives and protesting government plunder on a continual basis. We should strive to make the daily lives and mere existence of the political class as miserable as we possibly can!

To quote Harry again, “It is the job of Libertarians to keep our Big Mouths OPEN!”

To this end I, Donna Mancini, dedicate myself fully.

Who knows, if we all work together, maybe we can make government positions so undesirable, no one will aspire to the vocation and we will get Freedom by default!
