Harper calls on Frankfort policymakers LEXINGTON, Ky. — Republican businessman and gubernatorial candidate Billy Harper today called on Kentucky policymakers to reevaluate their approach to state spending and the allocation of taxpayer funds before meeting again in Frankfort.
Harper’s statement comes in response to a legislative scorecard on fiscal issues for members of the General Assembly released this week by the Kentucky Club for Growth, a fiscal watchdog group based in Covington. The scorecard ranked lawmakers for their votes on issues related to taxes and government spending during the 2007 legislative session. According to the study, just four lawmakers received passing grades.

“Fiscal responsibility in Frankfort has taken a back seat to politics for years now, and state policymakers need to reevaluate the way they spend taxpayer funds,” Harper said. “Education reform and economic development, state government’s most important responsibilities, have been allowed to whither on the vine while many policymakers have looked after their own special interests.”
Harper is the only candidate in either primary to sign a pledge not to raise taxes. He has led the fight to repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax, which punishes unprofitable businesses. Harper serves as president of Harper Industries and is a past chairman of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.
