Ismael Ax – The Shooter was another son of sacrifice http://www.tcsdaily.com/article.aspx?id=041807B
Cap and trade: a bad trade-off for the economy http://townhall.com/columnists/WayneWinegarden/2007/04/21/cap_and_trade_a_bad_trade-off_for_the_economy_and_company_earnings*
A trail of slime – Thomas Sowell Ironically, it was a black taxi driver who provided the first evidence that the charge was false. He said that one of the accused was in his cab, going to a bank, at the time the rape was supposed to have occurred. That taxi driver was subsequently brought in for police interrogation on a wholly unrelated matter and grilled for hours before being released, without being charged with anything. Little, if anything, was heard from that taxi driver again about the Duke rape case. Apparently he got the message. http://townhall.com/columnists/ThomasSowell/2007/04/19/a_trail_of_slime
A gutless lynch mob – Thomas Sowell This year, after all the charges have collapsed like a house of cards, the campus lynch mob -- including Duke University president Richard H. Brodhead -- are backpedalling swiftly and washing their hands like Pontius Pilate…. It is bad enough to be part of a lynch mob. It is worse to deny that you are part of a lynch mob, while standing there holding the rope in your hands…. If prosecutors can drag people through the mud and keep felony charges hanging over their heads, long after all the evidence says the opposite of what they were charged with, then any of us, anywhere, can be put through a living hell whenever it suits the whim or the political agenda of a district attorney. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/ThomasSowell/2007/04/17/a_gutless_lynch_mob
Freedom’s champions - Kasparov and others who are taking on the Kremlin's repressive actions must be raised up by the Bush Administration and Congress as test cases of the Russian government's worthiness for a place at the table of civilized nations – to say nothing of its inclusion in such company as the G-8 and World Trade Organization. Today's refuseniks, like those of yesteryear, are after all canaries in the mineshaft. If their voices are allowed to be extinguished (in some cases, literally), their oppressors will be emboldened in their menacing behavior towards others, including Western interests. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/FrankJGaffneyJr/2007/04/16/freedoms_champions
The media’s trial of the Duke Lacrosse players - So where do the Duke University lacrosse players go to get their time, money and reputations back? … If a group of black men had been ruthlessly prosecuted for the alleged rape of a white woman under identical circumstances, if elite professors had referred to the defendants as "scummy Negroes," decent people would immediately recognize it as a racist witch hunt. Unfortunately, it appears we're willing to tolerate malicious accusations leveled at "privileged white males." If white men have unlimited power in our society, why can't they protect themselves from prosecution for crimes they didn't commit? http://www.townhall.com/columnists/AshleyHerzog/2007/04/16/the_medias_trial_of_the_duke_lacrosse_players
We are not a sick society – we are the last best hope – Bill Bennett Liviu Librescu, a professor at Virginia Tech, was such an American, by adoption. He adopted this country, taught aeronautical engineering, and yesterday, saved young Americans. Eisenhower and the American military liberated the death camps, saved people like Librescu. Yesterday, he returned the favor, and stood in the doorway while students were able to escape. He survived the Holocaust and Hitler to do this. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/BillBennett/2007/04/17/we_are_not_a_sick_society;_we_are_the_last_best_hope
You’re dead, I’m healing – Dennis Prager Personally, I don't want to heal now. I want to feel rage at the monster who slaughtered all those young innocent people at Virginia Tech. And I want to grieve over those innocents' deaths. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/DennisPrager/2007/04/17/youre_dead,_im_healing Minority view: Exploiting Ignorance – Walter Williams [I]f a U.S. company pays a Cambodian $3 a day, when his next best opportunity -- digging through trash at a nasty dump -- yields 75 cents a day, has that company made him worse off or better off? … Delegates from slave states wanted slaves counted as whole persons for the purposes of determining representation in Congress. That would have given the South greater political power. … Americans' ignorance of our history and inability to think critically have provided considerable ammunition for those who want to divide us in pursuit of their agenda. I don't usually buy into conspiracy theories, but it's tempting to think America's charlatans, quacks and demagogues are in cahoots with the teaching establishments at our government schools and colleges to dumb down the nation. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/WalterEWilliams/2007/04/18/a_minority_view_exploiting_ignorance
Getting perspective on Imus and Duke (and hate crimes) – Star Parker The extent to which we handle race as a political rather than a moral problem, we're going to get it wrong. … Hate-crime legislation does not prevent a single violent act that is not already prohibited by law. What it does is provide a venue to politicize law by opening the door for politicians to control words and thoughts of private citizens to predetermined political ends. … Did anyone notice, for example, outrage from Jackson or Sharpton about Harry Belafonte's remarks calling Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell "house slaves"? With the passage of this so-called hate-crime bill, pastors will be intimidated to condemn homosexual behavior from their pulpits. Is this the freedom we want? Politics cannot fill the vacuum left when individual citizens abandon personal standards of decency and morality. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/StarParker/2007/04/16/getting_perspective_on_imus_and_duke Romney surge http://www.townhall.com/columnists/KathrynJeanLopez/2007/04/16/romney_makes_financial_and_ideological_surge The never-ending energy conspiracy – Doug Bandow http://gcc.savvior.com/The_Never_Ending_Energy_Conspiracy.php
Lessons from Imus – Dinesh D’Souza I"ve noticed that the Middle Eastern media is treating the Imus story--and how our little scandals travel worldwide!--with a certain degree of relish. And I think I know why. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/DineshDSouza/2007/04/16/lessons_from_imus
Imus and the wonderful people – David Limbaugh Shouldn't we quit treating these young ladies like they're helpless and fragile? Haven't they have proven quite the opposite with their dignified response and their gracious acceptance of the Imus apology? … For the wonderful people, it's not the words you use, but what the wonderful people choose to pronounce you meant by them. Heaven help us if these Stalinists are ever completely in charge of speech in this country. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/column.aspx?UrlTitle=imus_and_the_wonderful_people&ns=DavidLimbaugh&dt=04/17/2007&page=2
Victimization or courage? Carol Platt Liebau What we should be communicating to the young of all genders and all races is that, as vile and wrong as Imus’ statement may have been, it has no power other than what they choose to give it. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/CarolPlattLiebau/2007/04/16/victimization_or_courage Illinois principal and teacher resign amid sex scandal http://nwi.com/articles/2007/04/13/news/top_news/doc6387dc0aae8ecb91862572bc000421e7.txt Contitutional problems with campaign finance regulations – Bradley Smith In modern society, money facilitates speech. It costs money to publish a newspaper or operate a broadcast station. It is not possible to run a political campaign or effectively criticize officeholders without spending money for signs, advertisements, rallies, mailers, and more … As P.J. O'Rourke says: "You want to get elected to change the government and the only place you can go to get the money necessary to run for election is the government you want to change. Do you see something a little East German about that?" .http://www.townhall.com/columnists/BradleySmith/2007/04/17/constitutional_problems_with_campaign_finance_regulation
