For 30 years everyone from the mayor of Dogpatch to the President of the United States has been aware that the VA hospitals give substandard treatment to the servicemen they serve.  Now, everyone is pretending to be shocked.  I had a client years ago who was retired from the service, and he was talking about the hospitals bills that he had incurred that were not covered by his insurance program.  I asked, “Why didn’t you go to the VA Hospital?”  I knew he was eligible for benefits from the VA.  He looked at me like I had lost my mind and said, “I didn’t go to the VA Hospital because I wanted to increase my chances of survival.”  Then he delineated some of the horrors that he had experienced in VA system.  I was amazed.  Since then I have understood that there are a lot of problems with VA hospitals, and I don’t think the public should let the politicos get away by pretending to be surprised at the conditions in the VA system.
