Christmas Is All About Freedom

By Theresa Fritz Camoriano

Jesus of Nazareth was born in a manger in a barn because of an overbearing government that forced Mary and Joseph to make a long trek so they could register to pay their taxes.   Unfortunately, governments are still overbearing parasites, and they still tax us as much as they can.  On the other hand, the birth of Jesus has made a tremendous difference.

Jesus taught that every person was made in the image and likeness of God, so every person should be treated with respect.

Jesus was a teacher – not an enforcer.  He taught by parables and by example, but he did not force anyone to live in accordance with his teachings.  Instead, he left people free to live as they chose – to make mistakes, suffer, and sometimes serve as examples to others of how not to live.

The state and national governments in the United States were established in light of Jesus’ teachings, with the idea that our rights come from God, not from man.  For that reason, our founders believed government should be very limited, providing a “live and let live” society, in which all people are treated with respect and are free to live in accordance with their own desires and beliefs, as long as they accord the same freedom and respect to others.

The concept of equal justice under the law is straight from Jesus’ play book.  So are the ideas of voluntary charity (not tax-based aid), respect for private property, and an appreciation for wise investing, hard work, and productivity.

Some people who claim to favor individual liberty want to remove all vestiges of Christianity from our society in order to prevent offending anyone.  Before they destroy those foundations of our society, they might want to stop and think about where our society’s belief in tolerance and respect for individual liberty comes from.

If those people succeed in destroying the general appreciation in our society for the root from which our liberty has grown, then who will be left to defend that liberty, and what foundation will any defenders have from which to defend it?

Have a very Merry Christmas, and please remember who and what we are celebrating during this season.
