Thanksgiving, Campaign Finance, and Greedy Capitalists By Theresa Fritz Camoriano
1. Thanksgiving - This week, I would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and remind you to re-read the real Thanksgiving story, which explains why the Pilgrims nearly starved to death and what changes they made that finally allowed them to prosper.
2. Campaign Finance - I received a phone call from Richard Lewis last week concerning campaign finance laws and how they affected our most recent elections. He pointed out that, in southern Indiana, Mike Sodrel and Baron Hill had pledged to keep their campaigns clean and avoid mudslinging. However, there was considerable mudslinging in that campaign, done by the political parties, over which the candidates had no control. In fact, if the candidates had tried to control those ads, they would have been in trouble for “coordination” in violation of the campaign finance laws. So, the effect of the campaign finance laws has been just the opposite of the claimed intent of elevating elections and ridding them of the mudslinging. Further, Richard pointed out that the current campaign laws give greater rights to institutions than to individual people. This is a perversion of our former first amendment rights as individuals -- now we have no right to free political speech as individuals but have to establish ourselves as being a newspaper or other similar institution in order to have the right to free, unrestricted political speech.
3. Greedy Capitalists - This Thanksgiving week, I would like to give thanks to all the greedy capitalists in our world – those people who strive day and night to serve the wants and needs of their fellow humans in order to earn a buck. These folks are the true public servants, as contrasted with government employees, who get their bucks by force through taxation. When I have a problem that needs to be solved, I know which type of person to go to – the one who has to serve me in order to make a profit from money I give voluntarily, not the one who uses force or the threat of force to take my money. It’s those greedy capitalists who have made my life better with cars, cell phones, medicines, and healthy convenience foods.
And what have the government folks done? They have taken my money to spend on their friends and line their pockets. They have forced me to support their schools which indoctrinate children against my views. They have trapped my parents in a socialist medicine scheme called Medicare, which limits their ability to obtain good treatment. Don’t get me started!
