Letter To The Editor

November 16, In the Year of our Lord 2006

Draft dodger, anti-war protester, and multiple council race loser Don Pratt writes the standard line from the left, which is to close the U. S. Army School of the Americas. Since the SOA was legally closed in 2001, I assume Pratt is whining about its successor, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC).

Supporters argue they do not teach abuse and that no school should be held accountable for the actions of only some of its graduates, and the curriculum includes human rights.

A federal board oversees the school. It includes chairmen and ranking minority members of both houses' Armed Services Committees, the senior Army officer responsible for training, representatives of the Secretary of State, the U.S. Southern command, and six people chosen by the Secretary of Defense (from academia and the religious and human rights communities).

The board reviews the institute's curriculum to assure it complies with U.S. laws and doctrine, and is consistent with U.S. policy goals toward Latin America and the Caribbean.

Having witnessed Don Pratt organizing anti-war protesters in Triangle Park when the President came to town, I find his latest attack against all things military consistent with his positions since dodging the Vietnam draft. Quoting pro-Soviet internationalist Wendell Wilkie doesn’t help Pratt’s credibility.
