Schansberg on Education Monopoly

Dr./Mr. Haynes,

I enjoyed reading your recent article on the graduation ceremony in Russell Springs, KY.

For better or worse, the (Louisville) Courier-Journal used your phrase "tyranny of the majority" for the title of your essay. Of course, if the students had not protested (was that an example of civil disobedience?), then you could have written about the "tyranny of the minority" instead. In any case, such competing tyrannies are almost impossible to avoid-- as long as we have a "tyranny of the monopoly". Perhaps focusing on the disease next time-- rather than the symptoms-- will bring us closer to a cure...

Grace and peace to you and yours, eric
