Commentaries by:
“[State controlled] education is a weapon, whose effect depends on who holds it in his hands and at whom it is aimed.” – Joseph Stalin
"[I]f you serve a child a rotten hamburger in America, federal, state, and local agencies will investigate you, summon you, close you down, whatever. But if you provide a child with a rotten education, nothing happens, except that you're liable to be given more money to do it with." --Ronald Reagan
“Give me four
years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be
uprooted.” - Vladimir Ilyich Lenin (1870-1924) |
In a democracy, we have always had to worry about the ignorance of the uneducated. Today we have to worry about the ignorance of people with college degrees. – Thomas Sowell
Rescuing My Uncle From The Healthcare Establishment By Theresa Fritz Camoriano If you are wondering why there was no Jefferson Review last week, it is because I was in the middle of one of the most difficult jobs I have ever done in my life – springing my Uncle John from a nursing home. “Unc” has been sick on and off for the past eight months, moving back and forth from the hospital to the nursing home. He had about four or five different stints in the hospital for various reasons, beginning with pneumonia and including stitches for a fall he had in the nursing home. At this point, he is in pretty good physical shape, and there are no more treatments he could receive from the nursing home to improve his condition. His doctor said it is time for him to go home, but the staff at the nursing home had been telling him that he couldn’t make it in the “outside world” anymore. They said he should continue to stay in the nursing home, spending $10,000 per month until his money ran out, and then relying on the state to take care of him.
‘Mission: Possible’ by Jim WatersTake it from this movie reviewer: The latest installment of “Mission: Impossible” is worth at least the price of the ticket and a bag of popcorn. The familiar “this-mission-should-you-choose-to-accept” is – as always – accepted by agent Ethan Hunt, who is assisted by the Impossible Mission Taskforce. Kentucky has its own seemingly impossible mission: Free kids from failing schools, unshackle chains of educational oppression imposed by a burdensome government monopoly and make Kentucky’s education system the envy of the nation.
An open letter to the White Elephant Committee By Don Heavrin In Louisville, Kentucky, my hometown, there’s a movement under way to build a new basketball arena. The political powers love to spend taxpayer money, and this is their latest boondoggle. I have written several letters regarding the proposed arena. Set out below is my most recent contribution.
An Experience At Max and Erma’s By Jeff “Mario” Smith I want to share something with my family, and all my brothers and sisters. My son, of whom I am so very pleased, is a Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne and an OIF Veteran. He came home on leave last night for ten days before he goes to a new school at Ft. Bragg for 6 weeks. It is great to have him home. Today, I had to take him to the bank for some business, and from there we went to the Harley shop in Lexington, KY, a brand new one, and then to lunch.
Congratulations to Ken Blackwell By Robert Butler Secretary, Libertarian Party of Ohio Congratulations to Ken Blackwell and his campaign staff. This may be the first time in history a politician has broken his central campaign promise to cut state and local taxing and spending BEFORE getting elected. Backroom negotiations with his own Republican Party have led to a deal to prevent proposed tax cuts at the local level.
Stepping into Liberty: A Place to Begin From the Alliance for the Separation of School and State Before wading into the huge pool of resources and opportunities available to parents and their supporters, we'd like to give you the opportunity to put to rest any concerns you might have about the fundamental concept of separating education from the state.
The teachers unions are mad at me By Mr. John StosselTeachers unions are mad at me. The New York State United Teachers demands I apologize for my “gutter level” journalism, “an irresponsible assault on public school students and teachers.” This is because I hosted an ABC News TV special titled “Stupid in America,” which pointed out: • American fourth-graders do well on international tests, but by high school, Americans have fallen behind kids in most other countries.
The schools assume that children are not interested in learning and are not much good at it, that they will not learn unless made to, that they cannot learn unless shown how, and that the way to make them learn is to divide up the prescribed material into a sequence of tiny tasks to be mastered one at a time, each with its appropriate morsel and shock. And when this method doesn't work, the schools assume there is something wrong with the children -- something they must diagnose and treat. All these assumptions are wrong. — John Holt

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them." ---Richard Henry Lee "Despite all the tax cuts that the federal government has passed recently, Americans will still spend more on taxes than they spend on food, clothing and housing combined." ---Tax Foundation (http://www.taxf taxfreedomday/) President Scott Hodge "The Democrats want to raise taxes and increase government spending. The Republicans want to cut taxes and increase government spending." - Talk show host Brian Wilson If Congress is looking for someone to investigate over high energy prices, it should start with itself. Republicans in Congress should immediately review the last 40 years of government restrictions on energy production. – Newt Gingrich
