Many religious
leaders will mark Earth Day with more gripes about the
United States refusing to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. In
fact, people of faith – if not their leaders – should be
grateful that the U.S. government has rejected this
fundamentally flawed treaty. Jordan Ballor looks at the
“cap and trade” scheme.

Applications
are now available for the 2006 Catholic High School
Honor Roll. Since the Honor Roll’s inception in 2004,
schools on the top fifty list have enjoyed well-deserved
recognition and praise from bishops, administrators,
donors, and, most importantly, parents. This recognition
has proven the Honor Roll to be a powerful resource for
those interested in the character of Catholic secondary
education. |

Evangelical Litmus Tests
This article, “Evangelicals Debate the Meaning of
‘Evangelical’,” which appeared in the New York Times on
Easter, is instructive on a number of levels. First off,
the article attempts to point out widening “fissures”
among evangelicals, in which “new theological and
political splits are developing.” While the article does
talk at the end about so-called “theological”
differences, the bulk of the piece is spent discussing
the political divisions...
Bigger and Better
When I was in college, living in the dorms, friends
of mine would play a game called bigger and better. In
this game, they would take an object–something that they
owned–and trade it up for something that was worth a bit
more to them, but worth a bit less to the person that
they were trading with...
Rights of Skilled and Unskilled Alike
An op-ed earlier this week in the New York Times
examines the emphasis and attention that has been placed
on the influx of low-wage immigrants to the United
States. According to Steven Clemons and Michael Lind,
“Congress seems to believe that while the United States
must be protected from an invasion of educated, bright
and ambitious foreign college students, scientists,
engineers and entrepreneurs, we can never have too many
low-wage fruit-pickers and dishwashers.” |

Jobs Partnership of Florida, an organization
included in
Acton’s Samaritan Guide, was featured on NPR by
Barbara Bradley Hagerty. In
“A Jobs Program with a Spiritual Twist,”
(2006-04-03) Hagerty highlights the spriritual emphasis
that Jobs Partnership places on those seeking help and
the character transformations that result. Jay
Richards, research fellow and Director of Media at
Acton, was quoted prominently in the cover article of
the current issue of World Magazine. In the
article,
“Greener than thou,” (2006-04-22) Mark Bergin quotes
Mr. Richards’ criticism of the Evangelical Climate
Initiative. |

the market economy to work, agents in the capitalist system
