Bernie Kunkel Says: “Lower Taxes Through Less Government!”

By Jeff “Mario” Smith, Guerilla Reporter

March 6, 2006

Have you ever known someone, liked him and respected him, but never met him face to face? This is a common phenomenon today with all the communicating we do over the internet. In 1996, I decided to start speaking up and getting involved with the political process when a serial rapist and cokehead from Arkansas was reelected to the presidency. It was time to either take action putting my money where my mouth was, or sit back and whine like so many around me were doing. I don’t care for whining very much, so the world is now stuck with Mario, the Guerilla Reporter.

Having seen the abuses of eminent domain laws upon our citizens, the abuses of “tax and spend” politicians on all of us, and the leftist policies of a government that is increasingly stepping on our rights rather than protecting them, I have become vocal about these travesties. In the process, I have met some really great people not only in Kentucky, but nationally and internationally. There are a lot of people out there who truly do understand our God endowed Liberty and the responsibility we all have to protect it. Once you start publishing articles, attending political rallies, and communicating with others via email, blogging, and posting to websites, you start developing many relationships.

One man whom I have met “electronically” but not yet met face to face is Bernie Kunkel, H. R. and Safety Director for Bavarian Waste Services in Northern Kentucky. Bernie is a well-known and outspoken proponent of property rights, our Second Amendment, lower taxes, the rights of the unborn, and our Christian Heritage as a nation. I am proud to be able to say that Bernie Kunkel is a type of American that we need more of and that he is running for office in Northern Kentucky as a candidate for State Representative of the 69th District.

Bernie says he wants to “go to Frankfort promoting an agenda of LOWER TAXES THROUGH LESS GOVERNMENT.” We should all be as lucky as the people of the 69th District to have this kind of man willing to jump into the water with the sharks and fight for us. Personally, I would rather shoot the sharks from the boat than swim with them, so my hat is off to Bernie for being willing to jump into the fray, a fray that eats good people while promoting the immoral and the corrupt.

Having grown up on a Boone County farm, Bernie knows the value of hard work. He has raised cattle and hogs, grown tobacco and other crops, and has been blessed with a large and loving family. It is that beautiful family and his relationship with God that has most likely driven Bernie to be a proud “pro-lifer”. He is a long time member of the Northern Kentucky Right To Life organization which he says is a “no compromise” group. Putting his money where his mouth is again, Bernie supports many Pregnancy Care Centers. Sorry liberals, that hypocrisy thing is just going to have to remain on your side of the fence, no room for that with Bernie Kunkel!

In the Property Rights arena, Bernie has been on the Board of Directors of The League of Kentucky Property Owners since its 1995 birth, and worked diligently with Larry “The V.E.T. Slayer” Brown to end the dreaded “tail pipe tax” in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell Counties. The V.E.T. [Vehicle Emission Testing] legislation really intrigued me. Any politicians who supported this scam should be sent home from Frankfort immediately.

The V.E.T. was a tax disguised as an “environmentally friendly” ordinance when in reality it added to the pollution levels in the state. How? That’s easy. First, over 98% of vehicles tested passed with flying colors so it wasn’t really finding anything to improve in the emissions arena. This means that this program was nothing more than another clandestine tax thrust upon Kentucky’s citizens and cleverly disguised as a “necessary” environmental program. Secondly, Kentucky received “EPA Pollution Credits” based upon the numbers of vehicles tested. What are these EPA Pollution Credits, you say? They are credits issued to the states based upon numbers produced from these types of programs so the states can then use these credits for, get this, recruiting more polluting industries to the states. That’s right, the V.E.T. program actually added to the pollution levels in our state! Kentucky could also sell these “credits” to other states. What a scam, and how great it is that Bernie Kunkel was so invested in stopping this lie from becoming the norm in Kentucky! What a shame that we actually had legislators who were pushing this lie.

“And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.” --Jeremiah 9:5 (KJV)

On the Second Amendment, Bernie says that “is the guts of the Constitution.” Being a “three G’s” guy myself, God, Guns, and Guts, I agree! As a member of the Gun Owners of America, the Kentuckians for the Right to Bear Arms, and the National Rifle Association, his bio states he “will vigorously fight every infringement of this precious God given right.” As our AIRBORNE troops would say, Hooooooooooooooooooooooah!

Taxes are the most intrusive, oppressive, and communistic form of big brother abuse known to man. Bernie Kunkel is a member of Kentucky Taxpayers United, the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions, and Take Back Kentucky, all groups that seek to make government more responsible with our dollars and less requiring of them. Thanks, Bernie. Here’s hoping you can bring this attitude into our state legislature like the sun breaking through cloud cover to reveal light.

As a candidate for the 69th District, Bernie says that all pieces of legislation should be examined closely and the following questions asked.

1)     Is the proposed legislation constitutional?

2)     Is the legislation really necessary?

3)     Can this be better taken care of at the local level?

4)     Will the proposal increase the size, cost, reach and power of BIG STATE GOVERNMENT? If so, it should be opposed for that simple reason alone.

Bernie claims as his maxim, “The government that governs the best governs least.” I say AMEN!

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” --Proverbs 29:2 (KJV)

I have found Bernie to be very accessible and willing to discuss what needs to happen in Frankfort in order to return Kentucky to the people of our Commonwealth. To learn more about Bernie Kunkel for 69th District State Representative, go to www.berniekunkel.com or write to Kunkel for State Representative Committee, P. O. Box 419, Walton, KY 41094 [Angela Kunkel, Treasurer]. Kentucky needs Bernie Kunkel and every district needs a candidate just like him.
