Social Security Train: Next Stop Mexico?

By Mike Minton

In an article I posted on December 14, 2005, called "Totalization With Mexico Could 'Total' Social Security," which is at: http://mrrightopinion.blogstream.com/v1/date/200512-p2.html (last article on page), I listed the details and potential impacts of a Social Security Totalization Agreement with Mexico. Well, the time has come to once again revisit the issue.

Yesterday, I received a letter from Edward I. Nelson, Chairman of the United States Border Control Organization. In the letter, he informs me that H R 20, a resolution "Expressing the disapproval of the House of Representatives of the Social Security totalization agreement between the United States and Mexico," which was introduced on January 4, 2005, has now garnered the support of 40 Republican cosponsors.

"Expressing the disapproval of the House of Representatives of the Social Security totalization agreement between the United States and Mexico" is a pretty simple resolution, but the impact it could have on the future of Social Security in this country is boundless.

This resolution, along with any relevant information, can be viewed at The Library of Congress' website at: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:h.res.00020: --including the names of the 40 members of Congress who have thus far cosponsored the resolution. Hopefully, this will be an ever-growing list.

Folks, I cannot begin to tell you how important it is to make sure that a Totalization Agreement with Mexico is never brought into fruition. It would totally bankrupt the Social Security system...IMMEDIATELY! Forget having to worry about it being there for your grandCHILDREN, it won't even be there for your grandPARENTS, much less your parents, children, or yourselves, if this is allowed to make it.

As I explain in the aforementioned article, all that is required for a Totalization Agreement to become law is for the president to sign it. It DOES NOT have to be approved by Congress. And the only way to prevent it from becoming law is for Congress to repeal it within 60 days of it being signed by the president.

While Mr. Bush has not YET signed this Agreement, I expect that he will before the end of his term. This would be a tragedy for America, and Congress knows it; that is why they are proffering this resolution now, so they will be ready to act if/when Totalization is signed.

Please do go read the article I wrote on Totalization previously to understand the true ramifications of such an agreement with Mexico, how it differs infinitely from agreements the U.S. has with other countries, and then PLEASE contact your congressperson and ask them to cosponsor this legislation.

To contact your congressman by phone, you can call the capital switchboard at (202) 224-3121and ask to be connected with your particular members of Congress. And to find out who is representing you, and to find other ways to contact them, go to: http://www.house.gov/writerep/.

Once more, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is not to allow this Totalization agreement to 'Total' Social Security. Please act now. If we wait until the president signs this, we will only have 60 days to garner the votes necessary to repeal it in Congress.
