My Two Cents’ Worth By Theresa Fritz Camoriano
I didn’t put out an issue of Jefferson Review last week, because I was out of town working for a client who has been sued by a competitor for an offense he did not commit. His competitor appears to be using this lawsuit as a way to beat up on him, causing him to spend a lot of money defending himself, instead of being able to focus on serving his customers. Just another example to show how much the legal process is abused and how much we need to convert to a “loser pays” system to reduce the opportunity for abuse. If the competitor knew it would have to pay my client’s legal fees when it lost, it would have far less incentive to bring this type of lawsuit.
A famous guy in ancient times wrote, “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” Makes me think of many people today with lots of advanced degrees who are so puffed up and full of themselves that think they should have the right to force other people to do things their way. They pass laws forcing us to wear seatbelts, they tax away our money to spend on their pet projects, and they even regulate how much water we can use when we take a shower or flush the toilet! How would we stupid masses ever survive without their forced “guidance”? Many of them even think they are being very virtuous, using force to help others, but, in their arrogance, they fail to realize that their force-based methods are very destructive. By the way, the famous guy was St. Paul, writing two thousand years ago. Apparently, human nature hasn’t evolved much in that time.
Speaking of being puffed up, the Republicans have become pretty full of themselves, too. Many of them have forgotten all about their promises to reduce the size of government and reduce its burden on us. Instead, they have become intoxicated with power. I hope the Abramoff scandal will cause them to return to their roots and encourage them to reduce the size and burden of government.
John Stossel had a very interesting special on Education in America that has members of the teachers’ unions up in arms. To read an article by John Stossel about his special and the responses he has been getting, click here.
The labor unions are in a tizzy about Kentucky Governor Fletcher’s proposals to end “prevailing wage” laws and to enact a “right to work” law. Imagine the nerve of that man – wanting to give workers freedom and give taxpayers a break on the cost of construction projects! Colgate is leaving Indiana for right-to-work state Tennessee, U.S. auto makers are finding it very difficult to compete due to contracts they have made with unions, and the Louisville Orchestra’s union is about to negotiate itself out of business, ignoring its red ink and refusing to make concessions in order to become solvent. These days, the only unions that are growing are those protected by government monopolies. Unions in the private sector are putting themselves out of business, because they consider their employers to be the enemy, and they cripple their employers’ ability to compete. Talk about killing the goose that laid the golden eggs! Well, that’s what a Marxist approach does for the worker bees!
