Mike Pence to Run for Majority Leader?

A front page article in The Washington Post today gives more evidence of how too many Republicans have strayed from the party's Reagan roots of limited government. House Republicans are likely to permanently replace Tom DeLay as their leader, and the paper reported that Congressman Mike Pence, "chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, recently said in an Internet chat that he had 'no present intention of seeking any leadership position at this time' but that circumstances could change."

The paper reported that Pence "has angered some members with what they consider grandstanding on a host of issues." In other words, some Republicans are upset that Mike made heroic efforts to steer Republicans back to limiting spending.

A hat tip goes to the hundreds of Club members who gave a total of over $50,000 for Mike's election campaign in 2002. He has truly made a difference on economic policy and the debate in the Capitol about out-of-control spending.

A GOP Key to Reform

Today's Washington Post also reports that "House Republicans are hoping to rewrite one of the nation's most sweeping environmental laws -- in a way that could change how the government gauges the impact of its actions on the land, sea and air."

And who might be leading the effort to reform the National Environmental Policy Act, an incredibly bureaucratic law that generates over 50,000 environmental assessments each year? Freshman Rep. Cathy McMorris, who was endorsed by the Club's PAC in 2004. Club members donated over $150,000 to her campaign.

The Post further reported that Cathy "chaired the 20-[congressional] member task force, [and] said the law had led to 'delays, excessive paperwork and lawsuits' even as it helped guide the government. Late last month her staff released a 30-page report, which is subject to public comment for 45 days, suggesting possible fixes."
