Thanksgiving is not secular; hasn’t been since 1621 By Jeff “Mario” Smith, Guerilla Reporter
"In the name of God, Amen, We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God, ... Having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith and the Honour of our King and Country, a Voyage to plant the first Colony...."
These words are part of the Mayflower Compact, a short but very important covenant signed in Plymouth, MA in 1620. It is obvious to anyone, except those who call themselves “highly educated”, that these writings prove, beyond a shadow of doubt, the purpose for their celebration was to offer praise and give thanks to the Almighty God. It is likewise obvious they came here to “advance the Christian Faith.” We celebrate Thanksgiving, a tradition begun in 1621 by these worshipful people, to this very day, as we should.
Secularists are rewriting our history books, and through political correctness, seek to destroy all that God has bestowed upon us. I believe we shall continue the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving, a time to thank Him for His blessings, until Christ’s return. What we must do, however, is get into our schools, our publishing houses, and our other forms of information dissemination, and “seek and destroy” this revisionist history. The lies of the secularists must be exposed and summarily crushed.
The Pilgrims acknowledged that the Jamestown, VA settlement almost languished in failure due to its lack of a well run governing body acquiescent to the Glory of God. The original page of William Bradford's History Of Plymouth Plantation can be seen at this link http://members.aol.com/calebj/compact.html. A high resolution scan can be viewed here: http://members.aol.com/mayfloweb/compact.html. Edward Doughton (Doty) is the only indentured servant to sign this document and is part of our family lineage. No, we are not seeking reparations.
On December 12, 1621, Pilgrim leader Edward Winslow wrote a letter titled: "A letter sent from New England for a friend in these parts, setting forth a brief and true Declaration of the worth of that Plantation, as also certain useful directions for such as intend a voyage into those parts." Apparently, they were not afraid of long titles in those days.
Winslow chronicled the Pilgrims’ first year in Plymouth, New World, and made much reference to the truth that the Thanksgiving Gathering’s purpose was to give thanks to Almighty God "who hath dealt so favorably with us." In describing the Pilgrims’ three day celebration of His blessings, Winslow wrote, "And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."
That “plenty” has always been part of our identity as a nation, as well as our Christian heritage and faith. In recent decades secularists have invaded our governing bodies, our leader’s White House and State Department, and our judicial branch. Rather than accept our Christian heritage and work to protect and enhance this blessing, these folks have been destroying all that is Christian.
Additionally, through political correctness, they are elevating the claimed faith of the people killing innocents the world over, Islam, and atheism and secularism. Christmas is likewise disappearing from the public square. These folks are so rabid, they seek to remove Santa, a non-Christian secular symbol evidently now more popular in our society than Nativity scenes. It seems any reminder of Christmas at all is not to be tolerated.
What will stop these radical secularists? I am not sure if they will be stopped, but our family will be traveling to my father’s house to celebrate and give thanks to the Heavenly Father’s blessings on us, and our children will know and understand the importance of Thanksgiving. They will also hear about those who seek to destroy our faith so that they may be aware. I suggest all Christians do the same. If we are not vigilant in our service to Him, we will surely lose His blessings, as He so plainly states will be the result of any nation that turns from Him.
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Josiah 24:15 (KJV)
