Farm subsidy update (from a reader)
If you didn’t know it already: At www.ewg.org/farm, the Environmental Working Group has put together amazingly detailed data on direct farm subsidies. Now, they have added 2004 to their data set (which now runs for 10 years)—and they now break down the data by congressional districts as well.
For example, Indiana farmers received $5.2 billion from 1995-2004. Of that, in the 9th District, farmers received $492 million (6th highest of the nine districts in IN). There were 22,610 recipients in the 9th District over the ten-year period—141 of whom received more than $500,000 each, and 346 of whom received more than $300,000 each.
I was also glad to get an update on the Mellencamp families in Indiana. For the ten-year period, they farmed taxpayers to the tune of nearly $1.9 million. That’s enough to buy a few little pink houses for….uhh, them and them?
Anyway, have a great Thanksgiving; I don’t think that turkey farmers are subsidized!
