For two weeks, violence has been raging across France. Rioters have set fires, destroyed property and attacked police and civilians. Similar crimes, on a smaller scale, have occurred in Belgium and Germany.

The media are skirting the truth. They have called the riots a reaction to poverty and despair -- the same terms used to justify Palestinian terrorism against Israel. But clearly it is more than that. Most of the rioters are young Muslims, second-generation immigrants from France’s former colonial territories. Dutch news footage caught hooded thugs screaming “Allahu Akbar” -- “God is Great” -- as they set about their destruction. The French government has called on Muslim officials to help stop the violence, indicating that many rioters will respect Muslim religious authorities, but not French civil authorities.
