Kentucky Committee for an Independent Voice
Independent voters are reforming the political process
6% of Kentucky voters are independent--
The current law in Kentucky makes clear that voters should have the right to register and declare that they don't want to join a party - but the current Voter Registration form doesn't allow for that. It is one more example of the partisan bias in the system. In response to your signature, the Board of Elections agreed to count the number of independents registered to vote. But that's not what we're asking for! We want the Board of Elections to include a category for those of us who don't want to be a member of a party. We're mobilizing hundreds of independents to change this and pave the way to grow the independents movement in Kentucky. The Kentucky Committee for an Independent Voice is organizing a campaign for independents to speak out. You can help.

    To: The Board of Elections

We support the proposed Board of Elections' regulation to insure that voters who register "Other" on the Kentucky Voter Registration form be accurately counted. However, the regulation does not meet the needs of independent voters.

The current form only permits voters to register as "Democrat", "Republican", or "Other". There is no place for voters who do not want to register into a party to designate that choice. 39% of the national electorate identify themselves as independents. In Kentucky, while the numbers of independents are increasing, only 6% are registered as "Other". We believe this is because independent voters do not identify with the category, "Other", which implies an "Other" party.

We urge you to amend the proposed regulation to add a category to the registration form such as "independent" or "no party". This will permit Kentucky voters to accurately designate their registration choice.

    Sincerely,
