Dedication of the Wall of Honor

Dan "Danno" Dunnum, Second Brigade MC, Kentucky

Lawrenceburg, KY

November 6, 2005

My wife Pat, my Brother Hoss of the Viet Nam Vets MC spent the afternoon in dedication of the veterans memorial in Lawrenceburg Kentucky today.  We were not alone by any stretch of the imagination.  There were at least 300 people in attendance.  All of us were there to honor those that have served to keep our nation free.

Scott Harper, director of district 2 TFO organized the POW MIA flag raising.  Scott, Pat and I said a few words and I think we had an impact.  We certainly had the audience.  That is what was so amazing.  Pat and I are going on our third year in Lawrenceburg and I cannot tell you how proud I am to live in a community that honors their country and their veterans like Lawrenceburg does.

I know that Lawrenceburg is not unique.  It is but a part of what makes this country great.  It is one of the millions of small towns that dot the landscape of this great land from coast to coast and border to border.  The folks in the big cities call it fly over country…  We call it home.

Small towns are the heart and soul of this country.  They know how to have a good time.  They know the actual difference between right and wrong and they understand what is important.  It is not something they think about or discuss; it is what they do.  Small towns like Lawrenceburg are not afraid to demonstrate any of those emotions.    They do not do it for glory…  They do not do it for show.  They do it because they mean it.

This next Friday is the observance of Veterans Day.  Here around home Hoss and I will be at the Vietnam Memorial in Frankfort.  The service is at 10:00 AM.  Take the time to remember our veterans.  All of them, whether they served in war, peace, battle or behind the lines, paid a price for the freedom that we hold so dearly.

Remember these men and women always, but particularly this week and Friday for sure.  If you are a veteran or are serving in active duty I want to thank you for your service.  If you are on active duty I pray for your speedy and safe return.

I had a preacher that said something that stuck…  People often complain about the guys that go to church twice a year - Christmas and Easter.  Well it is true that it would be better if they went more often, but at least they take the time to come twice a year… and who knows…  One of these times it may stick.  The same could be said of part time patriots…  If they take some time out and recognize the REAL reason for Memorial Day and Veterans Day it might stick…  We all know friends that do not understand why we have veterans day.  Take some time to tell them… Who knows it might stick.
