Some Thoughts on Civil Disobedience, Diversity, Sex Education, and A Bridge To Nowhere

By Theresa Fritz Camoriano

1.  Civil Disobedience – On the same day that I was reading about the funeral of Rosa Parks, there was an article about a woman who recently had been groped by an airport screener and who groped back, asking the screener how she liked it!  Of course, the woman was arrested, convicted, and fined $2,000 for daring to stand up for herself.  Three cheers for that woman!  She is like a modern day Rosa Parks, maintaining her human dignity and refusing to cower in fear from abusive government action.  If only she would spark others to do the same as Rosa Parks did!  If all Americans demanded respect from the government and refused to cower in fear, there would not be enough police to keep us all “in line”.  Just as the Jim Crow laws fell and the iron curtain fell, we would win our freedom back.

2.  Diversity -       The very liberals who claim to love “diversity” are trying to attack Judge Alito based on his Italian heritage.  They also are booing and throwing Oreo cookies at Michael Steele, the black Lieutenant Governor of Maryland, who is daring to run for the Senate as a Republican.  Please spare us all these so-called diversity-loving folks, who attack conservatives as being bigots!  If having a conservative respect for the life, liberty and property of each individual (and not lumping people into divisive political blocs) makes a person a bigot, then bring on the bigots!  As a matter of fact, I think we should demand that in America every person must respect the life, liberty, and property of all people, no matter what their ethnicity, their wealth (or lack thereof), their religion, or their level of education.  Of course, this idea is a throwback to that bunch of old, dead, white men who wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence, risking their lives to declare that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  The “diversity-loving” liberals are just showing how far they have evolved far beyond such antequated notions and are proving their “progressive” credentials when they attack Alito’s Italian heritage and throw Oreo cookies at Michael Steele.

3.  Sex Education – The ninth circuit has held that a California school has the right to teach children anything it wants about sex without the permission of the parents.  While this has parents very upset, they should understand that, when they hand their children over to the state to be educated, they are putting the state in control of what their children are taught.  If they don’t like it (and they shouldn’t), then they should not turn their children over to the state to be educated in the first place.  Of course, that is a very expensive choice, since it means having to pay twice – once in taxes for the state-controlled indoctrination, and again in tuition for a school that teaches in accordance with the parents’ values.  Schools have become the modern-day equivalent of churches, teaching the religious values of politically-correctness; what we really need in this country is a separation of school and state, so parents will not be penalized financially for educating their children in accordance with their own values.

4.  A Bridge To Nowhere -  Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma recently challenged the proposed spending of $453 million of taxpayer money on two bridges in Alaska that would serve only a handful of people, proposing to use the money to fund hurricane recovery efforts instead.   Senator Stevens of Alaska blew a fuse and threatened to resign if his boondoggle projects lost their funding.  No doubt he also will use his powerful position to retaliate against any senator who opposed him.  Coburn’s proposed amendment lost in a vote of 82-15.  Kentucky’s senators both voted in favor of the boondoggle – so much for fiscally conservative Republicans!  How do we let them know we don’t appreciate their pork fest?  Unfortunately, most politicians seem to subscribe to the philosophy of Norm Davis’ bumper sticker:  America: “no child left without a budget deficit”.

The Senators who voted for Tom Coburn's amendment are:

Allard (R-CO),Allen (R-VA), Bayh (D-IN), Burr (R-NC), Coburn (R-OK),Conrad (D-ND),DeMint (R-SC),DeWine (R-OH),Feingold (D-WI),Graham (R-SC),Kyl (R-AZ),Landrieu (D-LA),Sessions (R-AL),Sununu (R-NH),Vitter (R-LA)
