Will the Vehicle Emissions Testing Centers in Northern Kentucky Close?
In response to the Natural Resources Council filing to the Atlanta EPA office, a request to delay shutting down the testing centers, Larry Brown, Co-Founder of VETO the VET, says "it is an obvious attempt at delay tactics, because there are no facts or basis for a federal judge to issue a restraining order. The Kentucky Environmental Cabinet filed a reasonable proposal demonstrating that less than one ton a day of pollution could be removed with reasonable certainty and that the three counties in Kentucky could end vehicle emission testing. Furthermore, VETO the VET, along with numerous scientific studies, have shown proof that testing was an illusionary event. The EPA’s own 1999 National Academy of Sciences study found EPA computer models overstated reduction from auto testing by 75 to 100%." In addition, "studies indicate the air in the United States will continue to improve for the next 20 years due to technology, not testing. Common sense tells you when 99% of 1994 or later models, representing over 87% of all cars tested, pass the test, then the test is not needed."
Larry Brown says, “if Tom Fitzgerald really is concerned with air pollution, then help the Environmental Cabinet find the remaining polluters in Northern Kentucky. But stop penalizing the auto consumers. Our studies show the economic impact of lost wages, productivity and fees attributed to testing to be in excess of 7 to 10 million dollars a year. Northern Kentucky has never been in a compliance category requiring testing. We have met and exceeded the air quality necessary to end testing.”
