HURRICANE KATRINA THREATENS SCHOOLS
As I write this I am in fear of the category 5 hurricane bearing down on New Orleans. I'm been to New Orleans more than a dozen times. It is one of my favorite cities. It is home of the New Orleans Free School, who's principal, Dr. Bob Ferris, had taken many of our school groups into his house when we have been visiting there. Some of you may have seen the great documentary video, "Why do These Kids Love school?" made by Academy Award nominated Dorothy Fadiman. It features New Orleans Free School, Among others. We recently received several copies of the one hour video video. E mail us if you'd like to know more.

Also, I am concerned about the Marietta Johnson Organic School, in Fairhope, just south of Mobile. It is the oldest continually operating alternative school in the USA, founded in 1907. Mary Lois Adshead, a graduate and trustee of the school, brought some rare copies of a book by Marietta Johnson to the AERO conference. They are fascinating and quickly sold out. We just received a box of ten more from here. You can order them from our bookstore.

In case the storm does any damage to their schools, ALL PROCEEDS WILL GO TO HELP THE SCHOOLS.

The AERO bookstore is at www.edrev.org/products.html
If you want to order the Fadiman video, it is $25 (used to be $90!) but it isn't listed in our store yet. To order it, just go to pay off your balance www.edrev.org/payoffyoba.html and put in $25. It includes a study guide, by the way.

2. NEW FUND TO SUPPORT YOUTH AT AERO CONFERENCE

We received a wonderful offer (below) from AERO Conference attendee Prof. Ken Jacobson:

Greeting all from a still quite Summery Boston.

The idea of non-coercive education carries with it a strong assumption of youth participation in the structuring of that education; youth as partners not just recipients in this educational enterprise. I have been disappointed that more young people have not attended the AERO conferences. On the thought that part of that lack of participation might be financial, I suggested to Jerry and Isaac that a Youth Scholarship Fund be established. The premise of this fund is to provide full scholarships (Fees, Room, and Board) to as many young people as possible.

How this fund works?:

Cost: Isaac tells me that AERO is prepared to discount full youth fees (room, board, conference fees) for the meeting to $250.

Goal: Minimum of 50 scholarships.

Funds Needed: Minimum $12,500.

Pledging: Pledge forms are available on the conference web site. www.educationrevolution.org/yoscfu.html

Age Limit: Scholarships would be awarded to youth who are either home schooling or enrolled in a school up to senior year in high school.

Award Mechanism: There would be no needs test, but rather the hope is to provide a scholarship to all youth who apply.

Voluntary Partial Payments: So as to provide as many scholarships as possible any young person who thinks he or she might not need a full scholarship would be asked to so note when they applied.

Application Deadline: March 1, 2006.
Application Process: Application form is available online at

www.educationrevolution.org/yoscfu.html

Accordingly, to kick this process off, I will pledge $500 towards the Youth Scholarship Fund.

Thanks in advance for supporting this fund.

Cheers! Ken Jacobson, AERO Advisory Board Member
