Response to Hawpe
Why does David Hawpe think it is appropriate to use his own freedom of speech to try to eliminate the same freedom for other people? The 1st Amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." Nowhere does the Constitution give superior free speech rights to newspaper columnists.
Everyone should have the right to free speech, including Swift Boat veterans, rich people like George Soros, middle class people who pool their resources to promote their ideas, and religious figures who speak from the pulpit. Laws that restrict freedom of speech only benefit those who are already in power at the expense of the people. One would expect a newspaper editor to support free speech for everyone. The fact that Hawpe wants to restrict the free speech of religious figures suggests that maybe he realizes his own ideas are too lame to compete in a free market.
