TERRY’S TIDBITS May 23, 2005
Melton Melting
Councilman George Melton has introduced a smoking ban ordinance for Louisville. It includes restaurants and child care centers. If you have been in a child care center in the last 5 years you’ll likely not find anyone smoking inside the building. I couldn’t find a Kentucky Law about smoking in child care centers though I’ve been told that there is one. However, if there is such a law then we don’t need an ordinance. If there isn’t such a law then child care centers are monitoring themselves just fine and we don’t need an ordinance. HEY, we don’t need an ordinance!
Melton’s reason for writing this into the ordinance is simply the old, “It’s for the children,” routine used by liberals to pull the heartstrings of other liberals.
In the last Council meeting on this ordinance, Melton didn’t do so well. He didn’t even seem to know where he was. He pretty much made an ass of himself. Aside from not being able to tell anyone why he wanted an ordinance he made a giant blunder when he stated that the bar areas of restaurants are usually smoky because so many smokers congregate there while waiting to be seated in the crowded smoking areas of restaurants. He never realized how stupid and self-defeating this remark was. Joe Bruno, a New York State Senator said something along the same lines when he stated that smoking rooms would be no good because all the smokers would be in there smoking.
This isn’t about smoking; it is about smokers and tobacco in general. It is about control and money. It is about forcing the desires of one group down the throats of another group. It is about Nazis in America, Melton.
The Council chose to hold off on a ban. It seems that there isn’t enough support for one right now. Isn’t it funny that those in power will wait for support in order to overthrow freedom, yet when those who support freedom stand up and scream, wave their hands, do cartwheels, and otherwise demand freedom, their cries are ignored? It seems there are always sympathetic ears for those who demand that their desires take precedence over the freedoms of others.
No Smoking Drug
There is a new drug being tested that if approved will help smokers quit smoking. But will it help smoke Nazis quit bitching?
This drug, by the description of how it works, is simply evil. You see, it doesn’t remove the craving that accompanies smoking, but instead, removes the pleasure obtained from smoking. So millions of smokers will crave something from which they get no pleasure. Next they’ll want to remove orgasms from sex.
Internet Wining
The Supreme Court has struck down a 70 year old law against shipping wine across state borders. It is about time. Will it be another 70 years before lawmakers in the 22 states that have the law on the books remove it from the books?
Kentucky is one such state. The law hurts our economy and it hurts our relatively new but potentially lucrative vine-producing enterprises. I can see no reason for such a law and lawmakers are having a hard time justifying it as well, as they scramble to justify it.
It would seem to me that if the Supreme Court rules one day that a law is unconstitutional then the next day the law should be gone. A law is either constitutional or it isn’t. So why might it take years to remove from the books?
Who is Gonna?
General Motor’s Onstar asks this question via the mouths of babes. “Who is going to open our car door after we lock the keys in the car,” a kid asks the camera? Don’t take the rap kid. You didn’t do it. But it would be a big help if you’d just unlock the door and let your mother in. You rascal.
“Who is going to find our stolen car with our brother inside?” Do you really want the cops and your brother involved in a high speed chase? Your brother will bring the car back as soon as he’s done with it.
General Motors, you should be ashamed. This kind of stuff is exactly what has motivated liberal simpleton parents to put government in charge of their kids. “Don’t worry Billy, you don’t have to think for yourself anymore, the government or Onstar will do it for you. You don’t have to suffer the consequences of your actions, except maybe being a little late to your Nazi youth meeting, so just bone up on controlling others and don’t worry about what you are doing.”
Disruption in the Force
The anti-smoking Nazis are going nuts and trying to keep it quiet. I don’t know why; most everyone knows they are insane.
There is a major push by about 20 groups, including several state Libertarian Parties, to boycott the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association, and the American Heart Association. The Associated Press has picked up the story and 37 states and 2 countries have printed it, aired it, or otherwise addressed it.
Audrey Silk, a retired cop and activist, heads up N.Y. Clash, a group fighting smoking bans across the country. Since May 12 she has appeared on local television shows in New York and radio talk shows in several areas to talk about the boycott. The smoke Nazis are seeing red.
Here is a partial list of those supporting the boycott:
NYCLASH, the national Smokers Club Inc., Illinois Smokers' Rights group, Indiana Amusement & Music Operators Association, the Kentucky Licensed Beverage Association, the Metro Louisville Hospitality Coalition, Forces Kentucky, the Cambridge Citizens For Smokers' Rights in Massachusetts, the Smoke Out Gary group based in Minneapolis, Minnesotans Against Smoking Bans, the Fight City Hall group of Minnesota, Taverners United for Fairness New York, the American Arborist of New York, the Madison County Chapter of the Independence Party Ohio, the Lakewood Hospitality Association of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Smokers Action Network and Tennessee's Yes S.I.R. group.
Now before anyone gets upset about this boycott please understand that these activist groups are encouraging continued support for other charities. The ACS, ALA, and AHA, have raked smokers over the coals and through their propaganda they have destroyed the livelihoods of bar and restaurant owners all over the country. In destroying bar and restaurant owners, they have robbed hospitality workers of jobs and have done so under the auspices of protecting the health of these workers. They have lobbied for bans and to raise taxes on tobacco. They have pulled the wool over the eyes of the general public by insisting that people cannot make their own health decisions, therefore they must be protected by government.
"No more," says Audrey Silk, founder of NYC Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment, said, "We will stop contributing to Big Nanny. Why do we want to donate to groups that are out to ruin our businesses and demean us as human beings?" Why indeed?
These three “health” organizations receive funding from government and much of this funding comes from the Master Tobacco Settlement Fund. As they cash their tobacco checks they tell you that those individuals and groups fighting smoking bans are backed by “Big Tobacco”. I guess their salaries soothe their guilt because in essence they are achieving their true agenda; get more money.
Ms. Silk has been scheduled for more appearances and debates with ban supporters. Already one debate on FOX has been cancelled because no one from the ACS, AHA, or the ALA would debate her. You see, these people know that their cause is not logical. They know that their agenda is akin to the Nazi war on tobacco in the 30’s and 40’s. They know that in a debate situation they would be humiliated and the true purpose of their agenda would be exposed. Basically, they would be made a laughing stock. They don’t like that.
Here is a link to one Kentucky paper carrying this news of trouble for the Antis: Lexington Herald-Leader. The only news organization in Louisville to pick up the story was WLKY television. Recently however there have been stories aired about the Brown and Williamson whistle blower who moved out of state and founded Smoke-Free Kids. Sorry, I don’t recall his name. What a Nazi town, huh?
