1. ACTON COMMENTARY

“Civic Groups Remain Relevant” by Jordan Ballor
Noting the declining participation in community and civic groups, Jordan J. Ballor assesses a different root cause than has been put forth so far. “The greatest share of blame,” he writes, “Ought to be laid at the feet of the modernist view of individuality, which minimizes the importance of community and social structures.” Read more »

2. THIS WEEK AT ACTON

Highlights from the Acton Institute PowerBlog

Law Signed Protecting Filtering Industry

This is a move that is far superior to the heavy-handed and ham-fisted attempts by the FCC...

Challenging the Micah Challenge

The "Micah Challenge" turns out really to be a challenge to get Christians to call for government action...

Over the Edge with the Religious Left

It seems more likely that the real threat of "theocracy" comes not from the religious right, but from the religious left...

3. ACTON NEWSMAKERS

The regular Markets & Morality column by Rev. Robert Sirico in The Church Report magazine was mentioned in a Dallas Morning News (subscription required) roundup of Christian media (April 29).

Research fellow Anthony Bradley had an op-ed published in the Colorado Springs Gazette, “Rap artists cash in on trash in a free, but amoral market” (March 30).

4. FOOD FOR THOUGHT FROM ACROSS THE WEB

“Pascha in Dachau” by Gleb Alexandrovitch Rahr, OrthodoxyToday.org
On May 1, Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrated Easter, the “feast of feasts” also known as Pascha. This is a moving account of a paschal liturgy celebrated by survivors of Dachau, the Nazi concentration camp, shortly after liberation by allied troops.

5. THIS WEEK AT THE ACTON BOOKSHOPPE
“Good Intentions Aren’t Enough” (CD) by Rev. Gerald Zandstra
Rev. Gerald Zandstra, Director of Acton’s Center for Entrepreneurial Stewardship, delivered an address titled “Good Intentions Aren’t Enough” on April 25 in Chicago. In this speech, he highlights the mistakes that are often made when good intentioned people try to help the poor, and presents a vision of how to properly assist those in need around the world. This 60-minute CD has just been added to the Acton Book Shoppe.

6. IN THE LIBERAL TRADITION

C.S. Lewis (1898—1963)
“I am a democrat because I believe in the Fall of Man ... Mankind is so fallen that no man can be trusted with unchecked power over his fellows.”
