LEFTington’s Heraldo-Misleader Lives up to its Name Again

by Mario, Guerilla Reporter

March 29, 2005

The editors of the Heraldo-Liberal, a group that has printed over 100 pro-condemnation editorials in support of misusing eminent domain proceedings to condemn a well-run and privately-owned company, are at it again. This time they are attacking Councilman Bill Farmer, Jr. for doing his job, that’s right, doing his job.

Councilman Farmer is working for the taxpayers of this city in trying to get the city out of having to repay a questionable $750,000.00 loan pushed upon the city by a group of wealthy and influential citizens who now do not want to actually have to “back” the loan as they said they would. The true colors of these alleged “patrons for the greater good” are shining brightly. These people aren’t about what is good for LEFTington, or they would be helping us move away from this divisive condemnation issue by paying this loan off as they promised they would in the event LEFTington could not. After all, that is what “backing” a loan is all about.

The H-L editors say that the pro-condemnation council members are in a “huge hurry” to walk away from the city’s “investment” in condemnation. I have news for the editors of our ultra left news rag. This isn’t about walking away from an “investment”; it is about not throwing good money after bad money. It is about moving away from the anti-American concept of condemning a well-run, privately-owned company that is an excellent local corporate citizen in order to take its profits for liberal social programs like empty buses running about town. It is about the fact that, with municipal ownership of our water utility, we will no longer have the PSC protecting  the ratepayer. It is about common sense winning over short-sighted emotion. It is about Liberty.

In their rant against Bill Farmer, Jr. the liberal editors attack Farmer for wanting to hire “outside attorneys” to comb through the loan documents for a “flaw” that would get the city out of repaying the loan. The H-L folks cannot understand why Farmer is bypassing the city’s own lawyers to do this. Uh, hello people, it is the city’s law department that allowed us to get into this mess in the first place, already throwing away over $1,300,000.00 in the process. It is rather obvious that the city’s lawyers are not serving the people well. Bill Farmer is right to get non-partisan outsiders to look at these documents. We need to move on and move on with knowledge, not partisan bickering promoted by entities like the Heraldo-Liberal.

The editors claim that allowing the backers to repay the loan instead of the city will cost us more money in the long run through bond rates and other financial ratings negatively affected by Farmer’s proposal. Somehow it does not occur to the liberals over at the Heraldo-Liberal that if the backers of the loan live up to THEIR obligation and BACK the loan as they signed on to do, there will be no negative repercussions because there will be no defaulting on the loan. It is time for the Heraldo-Liberal, pro-condemnation liberals, and the backers of the loan to take off their blinders and see that this condemnation process is over and the city should not be obligated to repay a loan that was questionably pushed upon it by a group of wealthy and influential individuals who wanted to push their agenda upon the rest of us, while expecting us to actually pay for it all. Heraldo-Liberal, heal thy self!
