I respect the right of people to indicate in advance what, if any, medical treatment they want to receive in the event that they become incapacitated to the point that they cannot express their will themselves.  Most of us would not want to be kept alive for an extended period of time by being attached to respirators and dialysis machines if we could not relate in a meaningful way with our surroundings and if we were not making progress toward recovery.  However, even given that position, I have several problems with the Terri Schiavo case.        (click to read more)

Choice Stifled       Bluegrass Institute For Public Policy Solutions

During the debate over the future of the school choice program in Murray and Calloway County, a parent told the county school board to “stop treating the children of this county as a commodity and start looking at how we can better prepare all of the children to be productive citizens of the community.”

Unfortunately, the commodity model of public education prevailed in the dispute between the two school districts. Calloway County officials succeeded in putting an end to an open enrollment program that had served parents, students and the community well for more than 25 years.        (click to read more)

Imagine it’s the last day of the school year. A sixth-grader walks proudly to the podium and receives a diploma from his teacher. She says: “Congratulations, you’ve graduated – to the fifth grade!” Picture the expression on this student’s face!

Recently a similar situation occurred at a hastily called special meeting of the Corbin City Commission. Paranoia, Birkenstocks, and Pony Tails in the Peoples Republic of Berea Kentucky (On The Subject of Social Security)        by Mario, Guerrilla Reporter

I had the pleasure of going to a couple of meetings last night about the current Social Security discussion. In Richmond, KY at 5:30 PM, David Adams of the Fair Tax alliance, Jessamine County Conservative Brian Goetl, and Chris Derry of the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions spoke to the issue of allowing Americans to invest a mere portion of their involuntarily confiscated Social Security dollars into private accounts that will grow for them. A bonus - with these funds "locked up" in safe and conservative investment accounts, Congress cannot get their hands on these funds to spend on their beloved pork and socialist entitlement programs. Nowhere in the mainstream media, or out of the mouths of politicians I have heard, is anyone talking about this wonderful bonus to privatizing a portion of SSI. If you were in Richmond, KY last night, you would have heard this.        (click to read more)

Activist Judges: Just Ignore Them and They Will Go Away.       By Justin Darr

After September 11th, my children came up to me afraid to go to school because they thought they might be attacked by terrorists, and I had all the answers.  I could explain how far away from anything important we live and how many times they were more likely to be struck by lightning than hurt by a terrorist, but they still want to play in the rain.  I would then open the newspaper, or turn on the television and show them all the steps the government was taking to protect them, “See all those soldiers?  Every one of them wants to protect you.”  My words soothed them, but seeing action being taken by our elected officials on the news had a tangible impact on them that something was being done about a problem in a way my words never could.        (click to read more)

After a long delay initiated by Councilman Jacques Wigginton, some say for personal grandstanding, last night the LFUCG Council FINALLY voted to override a Mayoral veto by Mayor Teresa (TI) Isaac, the TI stands for Tax Increase. In a typical display of arrogance, the "tax and spend" Mayor stated that the settlement with the water company she is trying to steal was similar to the one presented in January. She smugly noted that it contained none of the four items she had asked the company for. Mayor, could it be you are asking for too much?         (click to read more)

"The time has come for those we Republicans have elected to high office either to fish or to cut bait, either to decide they are conservatives or Democrat-like moderates, either to cut the size and expense of government or enlarge them, either to butt out of our lives or muscle government's way farther in, in short either to act like Republicans or admit that all this time they've been lying to us. ... Pushing for tax cuts is important but it's not enough. Endorsing a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage (it will never pass) is merely a sop thrown to cultural conservatives. Naming conservative judges is a step in the right direction but one cannot expect them to halt the advance of big government or block actions that affect national sovereignty. Already this year we have seen the House pass legislation that in effect, establishes a national ID card, which is one way for Big Brother to keep track of you and me. Regardless of what you call it, the president continues to push for legislation that will legitimize the presence in this country of more than 10 million illegal aliens. Likewise, he's pushing legislation to increase greatly the federal government's role in public education. ... Far from balancing the budget all he's promised is to cut the size of the annual deficit. Well, hooray! ... Now we are hearing talk that Social Security reform really means another increase in social security taxes. The Republican Party, once the party of small government, states rights, individual responsibility and, if you will, America first, is slowly coming to love Big Brother and big government and wanting to be loved internationally at the expense of American sovereignty. ... Anyone who thinks this is still the party of Ronald Reagan should think again."
