AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND CONGESTION RELIEF

Randal O'Toole

The affordable housing crisis and the growing costs of traffic congestion will be the major themes of the third annual Preserving the American Dream conference. The conference will feature dozens of speakers and workshops on the latest transportation and land-use issues.

In cities and regions all over the world, so-called "smart-growth" planning and rail transit are driving up housing prices, increasing traffic congestion, and reducing urban safety. If you care about affordable homeownership, reducing congestion, and safe neighborhoods, you need to attend this conference.

The conference will start with an optional tour of recent transportation and housing projects in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Speakers and workshops will cover such topics as:

  * The Supreme Court and eminent domain;

  * Problems with rail transit;

  * How planners make crime-friendly neighborhoods and dangerous streets;

  * Growth-management planning and housing affordability;

  * Inclusionary zoning;

  * The effects of tax-increment financing on local communities;

  * How to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution;

  * Helping people promote better solutions to urban problems.

The conference will take place in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, on June 24-26, 2005. For more information, see http://americandreamcoalition.org/pad05.html .
