Libertarians Endorse Ohio-TEL Amendment Step in the Right Direction
The Libertarian Party of Ohio has endorsed the Ohio-TEL amendment and will make it a centerpiece of their campaigns for 2006. The proposed Ohio-TEL amendment would restrict taxing and spending to rate of inflation and population growth. Michigan, Colorado, and Washington state each have TEL amendments.
"A taxing and expenditure limitation (TEL) amendment is necessary to Ohio's financial well-being," states Ohio Libertarian Chair Jason Hallmark, "It's a logical step in the right direction to bring Ohio's taxing and spending under control."
According to the Buckeye Institute, "Ohio's state government spending increased by three times the inflation rate between 1994 and 2002. At this clip, the state government budget would double every 14 years. More importantly, this rate of growth outstrips income growth and exceeds our ability to pay for it."
"Republicans claim to be the party of low taxes. But under 20 years of Republican rule, Ohio has jumped to the third highest taxed state in the nation; only New York and California have higher taxes," notes Libertarian Executive Director Robert Butler, "We are also ranked 40 in friendliness to small business due to high taxes and regulation. This load has become impossible to bear."
"Ohio Republicans have refused to acknowledge the Libertarian Party of Ohio," replies Hallmark, "I think they're scared we might actually be the real party of small government."
"We also want Democrats to know that they can have social tolerance AND financial responsibility," adds Butler, "Voters do not need to choose between their pocketbooks and their social conscience. The Libertarian Party promotes both."
