Comments to the Legislative Caucus Meeting at Northern Kentucky University Presented on Saturday February 5, 2005

By Bernie Kunkel

Thanks to the legislators for being here and for this opportunity to speak to you all as a group.  My name is Bernie Kunkel and I am from Boone County --- God's country.

The Legislature is aware that tax revenues pouring into Frankfort the last 6 months of 2004 were up 8%.  Also, tax revenues have increased each and every year the last 15 years.  So there is no revenue problem in Frankfort, but there is an enormous overspending addiction as our hard earned tax dollars are spent faster than they arrive. We shouldn't be for more taxes any more than we need bottles of whiskey at an AA meeting. We only enable the growing of government programs when we send more and more to Frankfort.

Kentucky's taxes are higher than those of the surrounding states. What the people need is for you legislators to cut spending and give us some meaningful tax relief.  In 1990, spending on education was at $4,000 per pupil.  Today it approaches $8,000 per student with no corresponding improvement in education. We need to cut out the waste and fraud in these government schools. Half of the taxpayers' money is spent on bureaucracy and regulation and never even gets to the classroom.

So when you vote to represent us, remember that we judge you more by what you don't do to us than by what you think might be good for us.  And if you vote for more taxes then know that at the next Tea Party you might be part of the inventory going overboard."
