1. ACTON COMMENTARY

“Peace, Social Harmony, and Enterprise” by Rev. Robert Sirico
Too often, life is viewed in terms of intractable conflict, a vision that obscures “the remarkable ways in which society manages itself in peace and harmony.” Rev. Sirico reflects on the beneficial effects of enterprise and trade, activities which make so much good in the world possible. Read more »

2. THIS WEEK AT ACTON

“Green Building,” Environmental Newsletter, December 2004
What, exactly, is a green building? The term means many things to many people. By and large, a green building is one that applies environmentally friendly techniques and materials to the construction of homes, commercial buildings and other structures. In this issue of the Acton Environmental Newsletter, Rev. Gerald Zandstra examines the ideological underpinnings of much of the green building movement. He argues for a sensible approach that holds forth a genuine environmentalism — one that rightly understands the proper stewardship of Creation.

3. ACTON NEWSMAKERS

4. FOOD FOR THOUGHT FROM ACROSS THE WEB

“The Nativity of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ” Orthodox Church in America
The Nativity of Christ has long been counted as one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Christian Church. “Your Nativity, O Christ our God, has shone to the world the Light of wisdom!” (Troparion in Tone 4)

5. THIS WEEK AT THE ACTON BOOKSHOPPE

The Entrepreneurial Vocation, by Rev. Robert Sirico
In this essay, Robert A. Sirico draws upon theology, philosophy, and history to outline the contours of what he calls the entrepreneurial vocation, and its relationship with the deeper Christian message concerning the incomparable dignity of man and the sanctification of the world through human work.

6. IN THE LIBERAL TRADITION

Erik Ritter von Kuehnelt-Leddihn (1910—1963)
“The free market must not renounce gain nor make it a fetish. It, too, falls under divine law and is not subject to purely human regulations.”
