Your reporter, Joseph Gerth, reported that the people who oppose the “fairness” ordinance are opposed to civil rights for gays and lesbians. http://www.courier-journal.com/localnews/2004/12/07ky/B1-fairness1207m-5617.html That simply is not true and exposes the bias of your paper. Gays and lesbians should have the same civil rights as the rest of us, and that includes gays and lesbians who are employers and landlords. The so-called “fairness” ordinance is very unfair to employers and landlords, further stripping them of their civil rights of freedom of association and freedom of contract. If a gay property owner prefers to lease his property to gay people, shouldn’t that be his right? Creating all these special “rights” for special political groups is a boon to trial lawyers, creating divisions and conflict where they should not exist, and it scares away potential landlords and employers, because it increases their risk and cost of doing business. The result is detrimental to the entire community – gays and straights alike.
