Reason Express - October 19, 2004
Reason's Weekly Dispatch October 19, 2004 1. Rank Discontent Reason Express is made possible by a grant from The DBT Group, manufacturers of affordable, high-performance mainframe systems and productivity software. 1. Rank Discontent No matter how the Army responds to the case of Army reservists in Iraqi who refused what they called a "suicide mission," the incident provides a window on the way military families may view their relationship with the Bush administration. Military families are often expected to tilt Republican, given that traditional conservative support for military spending and military values are a staple of GOP politics. But with the call-ups and deployments of Reserve and National Guard units, traditional Democratic watchwords like fairness and justice have seeped into the mix. Clearly, some military families feel the Bush administration and Pentagon brass have broken faith with servicemen and women. The length of mission, the lack of crucial equipment, and what is viewed as a lack of candor about the state of operations all help tug usually reliable Republican votes away from the party. Could this dissatisfaction possibly amount to an election-swinging difference in those states, particularly across the South, with significant a military-family voting blocs? It's something to keep in mind as the last few days of the campaign unfold. http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041016/NEWS01/410160365/1002 2. Fallujah to the Fore It is difficult to discern exactly what the U.S. has in store for the Iraqi city that hosts a significant concentration of insurgent fighters of various allegiances. Air strikes have certainly accelerated on targets in the city that supposedly house bad actors, but this may or may not a signal the start of general offensive with U.S ground troops. For the time being U.S. commanders are apparently willing to let the insurgents concentrate themselves in Fallujah and may plan to trap and annihilate them in one massive display of firepower. Coupled with the national amnesty plan just announced by the Iraqi government, the strategy seems to be to confront insurgents with the choice of giving up or flocking to Fallujah to die. In the meantime, the U.S. has sought British help for its plans in Fallujah. Some Brits would move up from the relatively quiet south to take up positions vacated by U.S troops, who could then move on Fallujah itself. Assuming there is such a move. But by adding British forces to the mix the U.S. could rebut charges of unilateralism. http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=worldNews&storyID=6528827 3. Yahoo Says Boo Someone or something has spooked Yahoo into quietly deleting information from a discussion group that focuses on security technology. Publicly available Security and Exchange Commission documents as well as references to court cases involving one firm, which does business as Homeland Security Strategies, Inc. (and other names), seem to have triggered the deletions. The posting of factual, if unpleasant, info about a business does not obviously violate the Yahoo terms of service agreement. In fact, judging from email message headers, Yahoo evidently acted in response to a reported threat against the firm arising from the list. Reading between the lines, it would not be a surprise to learn that Yahoo itself was threatened with legal action for hosting the discussion list and simply opted to do the easy thing and delete all references to the firm. This is, or course, Yahoo's right, but it is still rather disappointing. http://cryptome.org/yahoo-tscml.htm 4. Quick Hits Quote of the Week "The camp is like an old-fashioned college campus - without the freedom, of course." -- Martha Stewart on Alderson Federal Prison Camp http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/news/101604_ent_stewart.html
Behold the Power of, ah, Marketing. Yeah Marketing. Snooty BMW admits it may build vehicles with lots of space, but they will not be minivans. Nope, no way. The goal is a "comfortable business-lounge environment." But no minivans. http://www.just-auto.com/news_detail.asp?art=46016 Do It Again and We'll Arrest Your TV Janet Jackson on the loose again? No, just some Oregon man's new TV set that for unknown reasons sent out an international distress call picked up by an Air Force satellite. A visit from law enforcement conveyed that another such signal could bring a $10,000 fine. http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/news/10182004_bb_tv.html Books, Tuition, and Record Label Support Fee The University of North Carolina is experimenting with "free" file sharing for students during a pilot program sponsored by an unnamed record label. Should the program become permanent, students are expected to be charged $2 to $5 a month for the service. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-10-16-unc-file-sharing-pilot_x.htm 5.
