Mario on Veteran

The Maysville, KY newspaper, the Ledger Independent did the right thing and printed a retraction about SPC Chastity Turner's "wannabe" war stories they had previously printed. I emailed you about this in early August. From reading the article, it appears that Turner is playing hardball. I think this makes her very eligible for the wannabe section of the POW Network website, do you agree?

Those who haven't served, or had siblings or parents or children actually ducking incoming mortars and bullets, don't fully grasp the gravity of the "wannabe" epidemic. It is an insult to those who actually did these things for someone who didn't to claim that they did. It is even hard to explain, but it hurts, and it is wrong. I am speaking, not as a Combat Veteran, but as a Veteran who has several Combat Veterans, including a son who did serve in Iraq, in his family.

Thank you to the Ledger Independent for doing what is right! Kudos to Betty Coutant for doing a very tough thing, and that is retracting such a nice heartfelt story that was written with the best of intentions. Trouble is, the story-teller who spoke to the reporters is a "wannabe", which is Veteran code for "liar".

Unfortunately, I was hopping Betty would use this opportunity to expound upon the epidemic of "wannabes" as I did turn her on to the book "Stolen Valor" by B. G. Burkett, Vietnam Veteran. Oh well, at least the wannabe has been exposed, and the lie has not been allowed to live on.

Thank you NCO XXXXXXXX of the 2123rd Transportation for bringing Chastity Turner's war stories to our attention. Thank you to VFW Member Tony "YNOT" Smith for doing the leg work in Maysville. KY and for providing a copy of the book "Stolen Valor" to Betty Coutant. Thank you to Chuck and Mary Schantag for your ever vigilant work in exposing "wannabes" and allowing them to live in "infamy".
