As a graduate of the University of Virginia I am saddened and appalled by the manner you have twisted Mr. Jefferson's views of goverment and public policy.

Surely you have been called to task about this before now.

Were it not for making a living, which is a nouciance."

Dear Ms. Stein –

Thank you for your letter.  If you would like to write a letter or article explaining how we have twisted Mr. Jefferson’s views, with cites to Mr. Jefferson’s own words to support your position, we will be glad to publish it.  However, if you do read Mr. Jefferson’s words, I think you will find that we accurately represent his views.

Here are just a few of his words for your consideration:

“To compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”

"Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone.  The people themselves, therefore, are its only
safe depositories."

“The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others.”

"Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none."

"Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare but only those specifically enumerated."

"Our peculiar security is in the possession of a written Constitution. Let us not make it a blank paper by construction."

“The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite.”
