Edie on Atheism and Education

Resa,

I understand completely how you feel about the teachings in the public schools.  http://www.jeffersonreview.com/articles/2004/092004/letters/resa.htm   However, one statement in your letter brings a question in my mind.  "...teaching them to put their faith in the state rather than in God."

Atheists don't teach people to put their faith in the state.  It's Communists who do that.  Communists are usually atheists, but atheists are not necessarily Communists.  I'm an atheist, that is my "religious" belief system.  But I am not a Communist, because that is a political belief, and I believe in democracy (such as it is).

I don't know how far down in my pile of papers I will finally get to Hawpe's article.  I often skip his writing, but will try to find it so I know what he said.

In any case, you made a good point about religious people not having to pay for teaching kids things the parents disagree with.
