The best kept secret these days is where Congress expects to get all of the money it appropriates to pay for things it says the people themselves could not afford to pay for. --J. Kesner Kahn

“Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end.”

-- Lord Acton

We Need A New Word        By Theresa Fritz Camoriano          What do you call it when the government takes money from one person, through taxation, and gives it to another – robs Peter to pay Paul?  There really isn’t a word for it.  The phrase, “redistribution of wealth” doesn’t make it clear that the wealth is being taken from the first person by force, and, besides, a phrase is very unwieldy.  “Generosity” also is not accurate, because a person can only be generous with his own money on a voluntary basis.  I have decided that, if we are going to be accurate in describing much of what is happening in the world around us, we need a new word to describe it -- “FLEECEROSITY”.           (click to read more)

Endangering the Dream: The soft bigotry of low expectations (Part two of a three-part series)        By: Mr. Jim Waters          Kentucky employers must have been furiously nodding in agreement at comedian Bill Cosby’s recent comments commemorating the historic Brown vs. Board of Education desegregation decision.           (click to read more)

Another step forward for property rights          by Henry Lamb

It went completely unnoticed in the press amid the hoopla surrounding the swiftboat ads and the Republican National Convention. Nevertheless, on Aug. 26, President Bush issued an executive order which could significantly change the way federal agencies do business.            (click to read more)

TERRY’S TIDBITS – I like Dick, Creating Jobs, Dramatic Rescue, Sleep           By Terry Gray

The Truth is Out There        by Lady Liberty        Because I have a very busy schedule, I attend very few events outside of those related to my job or politics. I do, however, make exceptions for things I think I might really enjoy. For example, a few weeks ago, I went to an Alice Cooper concert (for the record, yes, I had a great time, and yes, even in his mid-50's, Alice still rocks). More recently, I was in the audience for a talk on UFO's. Now, I know these things are a little odd, but such things entertain me and that was the sole reason for my attendance at both of these venues.           (click to read more)

Zell Miller: Certifiably Insane          By Jonathan David Morris         “Time after time in our history, in the face of great danger, Democrats and Republicans worked together to ensure that freedom would not falter,” said Democratic Senator Zell Miller at last week’s Republican National Convention. “Which leader is it today that has the vision, the willpower and, yes, the backbone to best protect my family? The clear answer to that question has placed me in this hall with you tonight. For my family is more important than my party. There is but one man to whom I am willing to entrust their future, and that man’s name is George W. Bush.”            (click to read more)

Is State-Run Public Education Necessary?         By E. Ray Moore, Jr., Chairman of the Exodus Project          When you grasp the Unitarian origins of state-run public schools you will see the enormity of the error of conservatives and Christians trying to fix or reform these schools. It is a profound error and indirectly helps the NEA and liberal left. The conservatives who fight to win school Board elections, serve on public school curriculum committees, and put abstinence education in the system are really helping the other side. I know this is a terrible thought, but it’s true. Some Christians now know this. They know intuitively that I'm right, but are still caught up in conservative K-12 public            (click to read more)

Russia’s 9/11 allows Putin to see the light        By Joshua Bunton          It’s morning and you’ve just completed the “routine” of getting the kids up, fed and off to school. Nothings different than any other day or is it?            (click to read more)

Information about Iraq history (from a reader – not confirmed)         Just in case you might think of Iraq as only an oil-rich nation, ruled by an evil dictator for thirty years, whether it has been supporting terrorists or may not be very important, here are a few important facts regarding the history and roles that this nation has played down through history.            (click to read more)

Silence Dogood, No. 4  (Ben Franklin’s commentary on formal education)

An sum etiam nunc vel Graece loqui vel Latine docendus? Cicero.

To the author of the New England Courant.

SIR,

Discoursing the other Day at Dinner with my Reverend Boarder, formerly mention'd, (whom for Distinction sake we will call by the Name of Clericus,) concerning the Education of Children, I ask'd his Advice about my young Son William, whether or no I had best bestow upon him Academical Learning, or (as our Phrase is) bring him up at our College: He perswaded me to do it by all Means, using many weighty Arguments with me, and answering all the Objections that I could form against it; telling me withal, that he did not doubt but that the Lad would take his Learning very well, and not idle away his Time as too many there now-a-days do. These Words of Clericus gave me a Curiosity to inquire a little more strictly into the present Circumstances of that famous Seminary of Learning; but the Information which he gave me, was neither pleasant, nor such as I expected.            (click to read more)

“A national identification card, in whatever form it may take, will allow the federal government to inappropriately monitor the movements and transactions of every American. History shows that governments inevitably use the power to monitor the actions of people in harmful ways. Claims that the government will protect the privacy of Americans when implementing a national identification card ring hollow. We would do well to remember what happened with the Social Security number. It was introduced with solemn restrictions on how it could be used, but it has become a de facto national identifier.  Those who are willing to allow the government to establish a Soviet-style internal passport system because they think it will make us safer are terribly mistaken.”
