"'Need' now means wanting someone else's money. 'Greed' means wanting to keep your own. And 'Compassion' is when a politician arranges the transfer."

 – Joseph Sobran

Breaking Eggs and Laws        By Theresa Fritz Camoriano          The Communists used to have a saying, “You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet.”  By that, they meant that it was alright to run roughshod over some people, and even to intentionally kill some innocent people, in order to build the paradise they envisioned for “society as a whole”.  From their point of view, the ends justified the means.  They certainly did break lots of eggs and kill lots of innocent people, but they didn’t create anything like a paradise.  If they had been thinking rationally, they would have realized that any society willing to intentionally harm innocent people cannot possibly come to a good end -- certainly nothing like a paradise.            (click to read more)

Brain Drain-Dollars & Cents          By Cliff Johns         A lot of our hard working and well-intended politicians are acting as great ambassadors and working diligently to stem our local “brain drain.”  However, they are increasingly challenged, in that at the same time as they are cooing young and highly skilled college grads (their limited definition of the brains that have been draining away), they have little, if any, real “brain food” back home with which to feed all the brains that they would like to actually move back to, in our case, ‘Luville.            (click to read more)

Legal Shakedown        By: Mr. Jim Waters         All Kentuckians should cheer the response of Jewish Hospital President and CEO Hank Wagner to the recent mass filing of wasteful lawsuits claiming that unsanitary conditions at the hospital cause illness or death.           (click to read more)

TERRY’S TIDBITS – Dead Wringers, Auto Reverse Windows, Smoking Bans, Tasers and Sprint PCS          By Terry Gray

Free Speech?         By Theresa Fritz Camoriano         In America, the land of the free, we are supposed to be able to speak our minds, especially on political issues and candidates.  If we care about government policies on subjects such as education, abortion, gun control, or the war in Iraq, we should be able to express our opinions, to try to influence the public debate, and to hold our elected officials accountable for what they do.  In order to reach enough people to make a difference, we need to advertise our views in the media, such as newspapers, television, and radio.  In the America I knew as a child, we had the freedom to express our opinions through the media at any time, but, sadly, that is not the America we live in today.           (click to read more)

Zealots blow smoke on property rights         By: Mr. Jim Waters          Buoyed by their success in forcing an un-American smoking ban on the private business owners of Lexington, Kentucky’s anti-smoking Taliban is now conducting operations across the Commonwealth. For these zealots, anything short of a total prohibition will not suffice.           (click to read more)

SOCIAL SECURITY REFORM FINALLY ADVANCES         by Rod D. Martin, 23 July 2004          For Beltway leftists, it's one of their worst nightmares.  For true-blue conservatives, it's one of their greatest hopes.  Forty years ago, Ronald Reagan suggested it; more recently, Daniel P. Moynihan recommended it.   And last January, President Bush proposed it -- while Senator John Kerry and friends attacked it.           (click to read more)

Doctor Fix-It         by Lady Liberty           This past week, I had surgery. Although the surgery itself went smoothly and my recovery is proceeding apace (thanks for asking!), events leading up to the actual operation weren't nearly so easily managed.           (click to read more)

It Can Happen Here       By Jonathan David Morris         Late last year, General Tommy Franks told Cigar Aficionado that another terrorist attack on America, especially one using WMDs, could "unravel the fabric of our Constitution" in favor of martial law. In this scenario, liberty would be traded for security at the request of regular Americans -- folks with 9-to-5 jobs and families to protect.           (click to read more)

Ohio Ranked 43rd in Economic Freedom  Libertarians Propose Small Business Initiative        A new report issued by the Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy ranks Ohio near the bottom of an economic scale designed to measure each state's interference with free enterprise.  This report was featured in "Forbes Magazine's" May 2004 "Best Places" issue.           (click to read more)

“If to prevent trade were to stimulate industry and promote prosperity, then the localities where he was most isolated would show the first advances of man. The natural protection to home industry afforded by rugged mountains-chains, by burning deserts, or by seas too wide and tempestuous for the frail bark of the early mariner would have given us the first glimmerings of civilization and shown its most rapid growth. But, in fact, it is where trade could best be carried on that we find wealth first accumulating and civilization beginning. It is on accessible harbors, by navigable rivers and much traveled highways that we find cities arising and the arts and sciences developing.”

-- Henry George, Protection or Free Trade [1886]

"As a member of this court I am not justified in writing my private notions of policy into the Constitution, no matter how deeply I may cherish them or how mischievous I may deem their disregard." --Felix Frankfurter

"This court seems incapable of admitting that some matters - any matters - are none of its business."- Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

“Why don't they pass a constitutional amendment prohibiting anybody from learning anything? If it works as well as prohibition did, in five years Americans would be the smartest race of people on Earth.” -- Will Rogers
