How do you explain how the market works?

Your daughter sits facing you in the grocery cart with a quizzical look on her face.  You have filled the cart around her with bread, eggs, meat and vegetables, when she looks up at you and asks: "Mommy, how does all this stuff get here?"  How do you explain to her that not one single person knows?

Or you drive to the mall with your son, and as you walk toward the dozens of stores inside, he asks: "Dad, can kids like me shop like this in Africa?"   How do you respond when a teaching moment as powerful as this arrives?

We aim to help!

Our focus at the Bluegrass Institute is to change the way Kentuckians think about government - helping them understand that government is not the engine, but at best, the rudder of economic development.

To accomplish that, we publish the ideas that help parents, civic leaders and elected officials explain how the market works, in simple and effective ways.  Without tools like this, kids - both little and big ones - can conclude that someone or something must be in charge of organizing the vast array of products and services that make our lives simpler and more enjoyable.  Strengthened by a good understanding of the market, young people can become entrepreneurs.

To help you better explain the phenomenon of the market, we present - The Miracle and Morality of the Market . To read it online, click here, or to download and read it later, click here and then print.

Written by our colleague Richard Ebeling, president of the Foundation for Economic Education (www.fee.org), this is one of the most succinct explanations we have read.  If you want multiple copies for an educational setting, please respond accordingly to this email.

So when that special teaching moment arrives with your child, or employee, or colleague...you'll be the pro!
