Drunk With Power?

By George Baumler

As I read the local news stories about a restaurant that is in danger of being shut down because not enough food was sold compared to alcoholic beverages, I wondered would the same test be put on other businesses in the near future? Could a shoe store be closed because it sold too many purses or belts compared to footwear? Perhaps a grocery that sells too many magazines or cosmetics could have its business license revoked. Do bars and other nightspots have a right to do business in a profitable manner?

With all the news about Fourth Street's latest reincarnation, one can only wonder if political pressure is being used to shut down Baxter Avenue venues in favor of the city's latest fair-haired child, Fourth Street Live (Galleria, Mall downtown or whatever it's being called this week). I'm sure the founding fathers of our nation would be proud of the way ABC, planning and zoning and other agencies are protecting our freedoms. Happy Independence Day my fascist friends, have the government tell business what to sell, where to sell it, when to sell it, and how much of they may sell, then celebrate liberty on the fourth of July.

"Your freedom is my freedom" is a phrase that never escapes the lips of those who think they know best how to run your businesses, guide your morals, rear your children and ultimately control every aspect of your lives.
