Elected officials don't have to be super-human advocates for the public good. They just need to follow a few time-tested policies to uphold their dignity and earn the respect of their constituents. When they raise their right hands and swear to uphold the Constitution, they agree "to promote the general welfare." Not the individual kind, or corporate hand-outs either. This means championing policies that generate superior long-term results and seek to benefit all citizens, not the kind that maximizes short-run expediencies and pleases just a few.
