CONSIDER THIS WARNING BEFORE PROCEEDING...
Sorry for the late posting today; however, I was in Washington at briefings all
day yesterday and got home late last night. Just now getting caught up.
Anyway, our regular edition of News & Views is below...however, there's an EXTRA
edition posted on our website which is dedicated strictly to the execution of
Nick Berg. It is NOT for the faint of heart or fair-weather patriots. In fact,
on it you'll find links to web pages which feature still-video images of Nick's
execution which are NOT being shown by the same mainstream press which is
reveling in those prison images at Abu Ghraib.
There's also a link to a website where you can download and see for yourself the
full video/audio clip of Nick's execution. I think every American SHOULD see
this. As the Abu Ghraib photos prove once again, a picture's worth a thousand
words. No words can do justice to the barbaric act perpetrated on Nick Berg.
It has to be seen to be believed. But YOU have to make the decision whether or
not you have the desire and stomach for this particular "reality TV." Read
today's News & Views EXTRA at:

READERS WRITE
"I am behind President Bush's war on terrorists," writes my good friend Paul
Willis from Pahrump, Nevada. "But the only way I will stand behind him is if he
kicks some terrorist a**, and I mean now. Friends and family are over there.
Playing patty-cake will not cut it. We can put in Kerry to do that. Release the
hounds and apologize later."
This is pretty representative of the vast majority of emails on this subject
I've received, though I had to "sanitize" Paul's a little for publication.
Suffice it to say he feels VERY passionately about this...as do, I'm sure, most
of you.
Then again, there are still idiots walking among us. One boob named "Bob" wrote
that we "Need to find out who ordered the CIA to order al Qaeda to execute
Berg. But you don't like reality, do you Chuck?" I'm hoping they don't let
"Bob" play with sharp objects wherever it is they're keeping him.
Anyway, I think it's important for Congress and the White House to hear from as
many of you on this subject as possible and I've been heartened to know I'm not
the only one out here who is getting frustrated with the war...not because we
shouldn't be there, but because we shouldn't be tying our military's hands for
political reasons. So I'm setting up a very simple question on the Discussion
Board today: "What do you think of the situation in Iraq?"
Please weigh in and repeat some of the things you've written me privately. A
LOT of folks from Capitol Hill and the White House read News & Views. They need
to hear from you. Don't hold back. Tell 'em how you really feel. This is, after
all, life and death. Just try to keep the profanity to a minimum. Here's where
to post your thoughts:

BRING BACK "THE CHICAGO WAY"
"If he pulls a knife, you pull a gun. If he sends one of yours to the hospital,
you send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way."
- Sean Connery in "The Untouchables"
THE KING OF SHAME
"Shamefully, we now learn that Saddam's torture chambers reopened under new
management - U.S. management."
- Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.)
AID AND COMFORT
"The issue is not to fire (Defense Secretary Donald) Rumsfeld. He should be
tried for war crimes."
- Jesse Jackson
SCAPEGOATING RUMMY
"Donald Rumsfeld has been designated by Democratic politicians as the scapegoat
for the scandal at Abu Ghraib prison. But any resignation would only whet their
appetite to cut and run. . . . (It does not) make strategic sense to remove a
war leader in the vain hope of appeasing critics of the war."
- Columnist William Safire
SOME COVER-UP
"There's certainly no cover-up; the Pentagon first revealed the abuses on Jan.
12, in a press release that Congress couldn't bother to read, and followed it up
with a March 20 announcement that criminal charges would be brought against six
soldiers for 'dereliction of duty, cruelty and maltreatment, assault and
indecent acts with another.' "
- Wesley Pruden, Pruden On Politics," 5/11/04
DEFENDING 2A
"The Second Amendment is a commandment. . . . Banning guns out of fear of
drive-by shootings...is like banning Krispy Kreme doughnuts because too many of
us get fat and die of heart attacks."
- Shemane Nugent, wife of rocker Ted Nugent's, at the Conservative Women's
Network luncheon at the Heritage Foundation last week
SCENE FROM THE "THOUSAND" MOM MARCH
"Chuck, I wanted to tell you a story about my daughter I thought you'd get a
kick out of. Caitlin was on the subway (in Washington, DC) on Sunday and was
sitting beside a 'million' mom. The woman was wearing a button that said 'my
nephew was shot and killed by a mugger.' The lady was going on and on to her
companion about how we should eliminate all guns from everyone. She looks over
at Caitlin - I suppose searching for agreement - and Caitlin says 'if your
nephew had his own gun, he could have shot first.' The woman made some snarky
remark back to her and Caitlin says, 'Well, bad guys don't obey laws, that's why
they are bad guys. Anti-gun laws protect them, not people like your nephew.'
That's my girl!!!"
- Kerri Houston of Frontiers of Freedom
SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS
"Chicago Alderman Arenda Troutman has achieved a new low in elitism, insisting
that she deserves special police protection after a series of burglaries at her
South Side home while her legally-disarmed constituents are left like
defenseless sheep in a city of wolves, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF)
said today. The Chicago Sun-Times reported May 6 that Troutman's home,
burglarized twice in the past three months, now has a police officer assigned
during all shifts to watch the residence, including weekends. In a statement
quoted by the newspaper, Troutman said, 'Deserve it? Damn right. I should
receive the protection I am receiving. I am an elected official. You're darn
right.' "
- Second Amendment Foundation, 5/10/04
ALL IN FAVOR SAY "AYE"
"A resolution urging Southern Baptists to remove their children from public
schools has been proposed by an Alexandria man for the denomination's annual
convention in Indianapolis next month."
- Washington Times, 5/12/04
HAVING IT BOTH WAYS...YET AGAIN
"Having twice used her immense wealth to rescue her second husband's faltering
political career, Mrs. Heinz Kerry now claims a highly dubious 'right to
privacy.' Her failure to disclose her (tax) returns would make her the first
spouse to shield this information in the three decades during which presidential
and vice presidential candidates and their spouses have routinely made this
information public. Mr. Kerry, who has twice exploited his wife's wealth in the
past and stands ready to benefit from it again if she makes good her threat to
unleash an 'independent' issue-ads campaign, once again expects to have it both
ways, just as he has done on matters of policy."
- Washington Times editorial, 5/11/04
REIMPORTING DEATH IN A BOTTLE
"Before legalizing mass importation of prescription drugs - and risking
America's health in the process - Congress and the White House should let drug
discount cards work and get other countries to share in the cost of drug
research.
"Mass importations are dangerous because they will almost inevitably suck in
fake and dangerous drugs that even enhanced government inspections won't
catch. They are also tantamount to importing foreign price controls, which
retard drug research and development of new treatments for disease. In other
words, politicians - in their haste to satisfy public demand for cheaper
pharmaceuticals - will end up killing people and letting others suffer from
delayed cures."
GOP TILTING AT BLACK WINDMILLS?
"If (Republicans) could even get 18 percent of (the black) vote, it could
potentially make the Republicans a permanent governing body. But it is actually
heading the other way. So as far as Republicans getting the black vote: Well,
there's no there there."
- David Bositis of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies
CANNON FODDER
"Delegates to Utah's state GOP convention dealt entrenched four-term Congressman
Chris Cannon a stunning political blow Saturday when he failed to gather enough
support to avoid a primary battle against a young challenger who made Cannon's
stand on illegal immigration his major campaign issue. Salt Lake City's Deseret
News called the upset a 'shocker,' and identified immigration as the deciding
factor in challenger Matt Throckmorton's successful bid -- on which he spent all
of $11,115 -- to face Cannon in the Republican primary on June 22.
"After the vote, Cannon, who outspent Throckmorton more than 18-1 in the
campaign, complained to the Deseret News about the influence of money in the
contest. . . . As it turns out, however, Cannon is technically, if
unintentionally, speaking the truth when he says that a lot of money has poured
into the race from out of state. According to Federal Election Commission data
posted by The Center For Responsive Politics, 94% of the non-PAC contributions
to Cannon's reelection campaign have come from out of state -- the vast majority
of it from the Washington, DC metro area."
