THE REAL SAVAGES

WOW...Y'ALL SURE LIT THIS GUY'S FUSE!
"It's frustrating because nobody will help us," high school senior Don Caldwell
lamented to the Washington Times with regard to his efforts to form a Teenage
Republican Club on his Baltimore County campus. That is...until News & Views
readers got into the act!
I got a rather heated, though professional, call from Principal Rob SantaCroce
of Sparrows Point High School yesterday afternoon. To say the least, the man is
not a happy camper. Said his office had been flooded with phone calls all day
and he couldn't even send emails out because his system was so overloaded with
incoming emails regarding the Washington Times story we featured in News & Views
yesterday.
In a nutshell, Mr. SantaCroce said the entire Washington Times story was "crap"
(I'm shocked!) and called me a few names that I had to look up in a dictionary.
He also maintains that, contrary to the belief expressed in some of your emails,
he is NOT a liberal. Nor does he believe any of the kids who want to start the
club are either intimidated by him or afraid of his authority. We weren't using
a video-phone, but I'm pretty sure he actually said that with a straight face.
Here's the bottom line: Mr. SantaCroce's beef is with the Washington Times, not
with us. If the story was, in fact, "crap," and not a word of it was true, I'll
be happy to report on the Times' retraction as soon as they publish it. In the
meantime, Mr. SantaCroce gave absolutely no hint as to when a TARS Club would be
approved on his campus or what he was going to do to facilitate such formation
or why the faculty adviser suddenly withdrew or whether he would assist the kids
in getting a new faculty adviser. No, let's just focus on blaming the press for
bringing the story to light, right? Go figure.
Let's hope Principal SantaCroce gets over his "myopia" on this issue and focuses
on getting the club started rather than blaming the Washington Times or News &
Views for bringing the story forward.
