1. Two Cents: Blowhard-er

Over the last week-and-a-half or so, liberal Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy (though he's been rated less liberal than his junior Massachusetts colleague Sen. John Kerry) has been even louder, more outlandish, more political and more bombastic than ever.

Here is just a sampling of some of his most recent comments regarding the prisoner abuses in Iraq and how it's all George Bush's fault.

----------

KENNEDY: We pray that mission accomplished has not become mission impossible. America's respect and reputation in the world have never been lower in the entire history of our Nation. Where do we go to get our respect and reputation back? Where do we go to bring a respectable end to the nightmare for America that Iraq has become?

--Congressional Record, S4963, May 6, 2004

----------

KENNEDY: You and your senior leadership have shown, I believe, a disregard for the protection of the Geneva Conventions in detainee operations.

ou have known about the graphic photographs, evidence of abuse in the Abu Ghraib prison since mid- January. You told President Bush about these reports of abuse shortly thereafter. And yet, rather than work with Congress to deal with the problem together, you and other top Defense Department officials have apparently spent the last three weeks in preparing the public relations plan.

--To Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld before the Senate Armed Services Committee, May 7, 2004

----------

KENNEDY: On March 19, 2004, President Bush asked: "Who would prefer that Saddam's torture chambers still be open?"

Shamefully, we now learn that Saddam's torture chambers reopened under new management--U.S. management.

President Bush has presided over America's steepest and deepest fall from grace in the history of our country. The tragedy unfolding in Iraq is the direct result of a colossal failure of leadership.

--Congressional Record, S5058, May 10, 2004

----------

MATT LAUER: Let me ask you about a story on the front page of The New York Times this morning. It talks about some of the methods being used by the CIA in interrogating top al-Qaeda operatives.... It says, "In the case of Khalid Sheikh Mohamed, a high-level detainee who's believed to have helped plan the attacks of September 11th, CIA interrogators used graduated levels of force, including a technique known as 'water boarding' in which a prisoner is strapped down, forcibly pushed under water and made to believe he might drown." ... Do you feel that we risk blurring the line between ourselves and the people we're supposed to be protecting US citizens from?

KENNEDY: Well, that the great danger. We don't abuse our values in order to accept the values of those that we are opposing. But the interesting point is much of that has to be personally approved by the secretary of defense. We don't know how many times he's approved it, what have been the conditions that he has approved it, what has General Sanchez approved in terms of those prisons over there.

LAUER: These are apparently secret rules approved by the CIA in the wake of 9/11.

KENNEDY: And they clearly are approved, ultimately, by the secretary of defense. That came out in the course of our Armed Services hearing. And we don't know. He hasn't been asked. He hasn't revealed. There--the fact is there is a great deal more that we ought to know about who was in charge. It isn't just the--the prisoners. We have to know the climate, the atmosphere, who gave the green light for the violations of the Geneva Conventions that have been taking place.

--NBC's "Today Show," May 13, 2004

----------

KENNEDY: And what we are continuing to see is blunder after blunder in Iraq. And what is happening is that we've lost our position as leader of the free world in terms of human rights. We've lost our -- now, we are the most hated nation in the world.

KENNEDY: n the issue of this kind of heavy-handedness by the administration in terms of the torture of these prisoners, the reason we have Geneva accords is, number one, even those these prisoners in so many incidents are bad and have done bad things that we don't want to have the same morality as those individuals.

SOLEDAD O'BRIEN: Here's what you said on May 11.... "Shamefully now we learn that Saddam's torture chambers have reopened under new management, United States management." ... How do you respond to that?

KENNEDY: That is part of the Republican attack machine, and I reject it.

--CNN's "American Morning," May 13, 2004

----------

KENNEDY: I've been on this committee for 24 years, I've been in the Senate 42 years, and I have never been denied the opportunity to question any person that's come before a committee on what I wanted to ask for it. And I resent it and reject it on a matter of national importance.

--when initially denied opportunity to ask Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz about prison abuses during a budget meeting, Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on contingency reserve fund, May 13, 2004

2. Headlines and Highlights from HUMAN EVENTS ONLINE:

"WHERE ARE MEDIA WHEN JIHADISTS TORTURE AND MURDER AMERICANS?"

Americans are so good at self-flagellation that even a heinous act by others may be insufficient to remind us that we're not so bad after all. For nearly three weeks now, the media has bludgeoned the Bush Administration, the Secretary of Defense and the U.S. military for the mistreatment of detainees in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. Now we have the horrific, videotaped murder of Nick Berg. As shocking as this video is, it is nothing new. Radical Islamic jihadists have been perpetrating this kind of horror against Americans for more than 20 years. And, as if to substantiate the jihadist's claims that it's not their fault, the "blame America first" crowd in the U.S. media looks for ways to point out how we really deserve what we're getting.

Where's the "non-biased" media? http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3901

"PRESIDENT BUSH WOWS CONSERVATIVES"

At last night's 40th Anniversary Gala for the American Conservative Union, President Bush gave the following inspiring, solidly conservative, non-stump speech that brought the roomful conservatives to their feet many times.

Check out Bush's speech here: http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3914

"MARYLAND'S EHRLICH NAILS IT ON MULTICULTURALISM 'BUNK'"

GOP Gov. Bob Ehrlich of Maryland, generally considered a moderate in a liberal state, cheered conservatives when he spoke out against multiculturalism last week, denouncing it as "bunk" while appearing on a local radio show. "Once you get into this multicultural crap, this bunk, that some folks are teaching in our college campuses and other places, you run into a problem," Ehrlich said.

More on Ehrlich's refreshing political incorrectness: http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3908

"UNION MEMBERS DEMAND SECRET BALLOTS"

As union membership in America's workforce has hit historic lows in recent years, union officials have increasingly denied workers the right to a secret ballot when making union representation decisions. As a result, union organizers can exert tremendous pressure on specific workers by stalking employees at home, and intimidating them in the workplace.

Read about these victims of union abuse: http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3897

"CRAZY-LIKE-A-FOX NEWS VIEWERS"

Last week, John S. Carroll, editor of the Los Angeles Times, delivered a lecture during "Ethics Week" of the Society of Professional Journalists. The speaker has not yet been announced for "Abstinence Week" of the Society of Professional Whores.

Showing the fierce independence of the mainstream media, Carroll's speech was yet another liberal rant about the threat to freedom and democracy posed by the Fox News Channel. Carroll cited the hoax poll liberals quote every 10 minutes that purports to show people who watch Fox News are ignorant retards.

Are you one of these people? http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3894

"KENNEDY EQUATES U.S. TO SADDAM"

Months before the pictures of abused prisoners were broadcast around the world on CBS two weeks ago, setting off a storm of outrage, investigations into the incidents were underway, and several persons had already been reprimanded, relieved of their duties or were awaiting criminal prosecution. There appears to be no cover-up here, no dereliction of duty to punish those guilty of abuse.

So why have some Democrats tried to turn the Abu Ghraib abuse into a partisan weapon? http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3895

3. Special Feature: Top Ten Books on Leadership in Time of War

We asked a panel of 14 distinguished scholars and public policy leaders to serve as judges in developing a list of Ten Books on Leadership in Time of War. Each judge nominated a number of titles, which were then compiled on a ballot that included the nominations of all judges. The judges then marked their Top Ten selections on this ballot. A book was awarded ten points for receiving a No. 1 rating, nine points for receiving a No. 2 rating, and so on. The ten books with the highest aggregate rating made the list.

Coming in at Number 1 was Churchill's masterpiece "The Second World War."

4. Capital Briefs: Teresa Heinz Kerry's 11%

The case of Teresa Heinz, the ketchup heiress married to Sen. John Kerry, the Democratic presidential candidate who wants to hike taxes on the "rich," is actually a good argument for cutting taxes on the rich. Last year, Heinz had $5.1 million in income, and paid $587,000 in federal taxes, making her effective federal tax rate only 11.5%. Why did she pay so little tax? Rather than fully invest her fortune in productive private sector enterprises--thus creating private sector jobs and earning taxable profits--Heinz sheltered much of her money in tax-exempt government bonds, taking more than half her income from the government itself.

5. Jihad Watch: No Margin for Error in Terror War

An American lawyer named Brandon Mayfield was arrested last Thursday. Reports indicated that his fingerprints were found on one of the bags holding the explosives that blew up in Madrid on March 11. Adding to the suspicion was that he was a convert to Islam -- and therefore possibly, like John Walker Lindh, a convert to radical jihad ideology.

But a significant question arose almost immediately. Not long after the FBI took Mayfield into custody, Spanish officials expressed grave reservations about the incriminating fingerprint (it turned out to be just one). It was, they contended, not similar enough to fingerprints known to be Mayfield's.

The FBI better have more than a single fingerprint on which to base their case. They need to assure Americans that they do have other evidence -- even if they're not able to say what it is at this point. This is because there is no way for cases like this not to be highly politicized from the beginning. The idea that the FBI is now rounding up random Muslims and critics of the Bush Administration is a cherished fantasy of the loony Left, but cases like this only feed the paranoia.

8. Political Roundup

EVANS & NOVAK: "Through the haze of Chairman Alan Greenspan's testimony last week can be seen the central bank's position. The Fed is ready to begin a very modest, very cautious series of interest rate hikes, in recognition of the reality that neither inflation nor deflation threatens the economy today. The tentative plan: an increase of 25 basis points this year before the election; an increase of another 25 basis points this year after the election; early next year, an increase of another 50 basis points... All that adds up to only 100 basis points, bringing the current 1% federal funds rate up to only 2%. Greenspan is expected to be quite cautious to avoid the excessive tightening that has occasionally backfired during his long tenure at the Fed. He is known to be particularly sensitive to what his moves at the Fed can do to dangerous economic climates in Japan, Europe and especially Latin America." http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3903

JOHN GIZZI'S POLITICS 2004: Here are a couple of this week's Short Takes from our Political Editor.

Unexpected in Alaska: In a move that stunned Alaska GOPers, Matt Miller made a last-minute decision to file for the Republican Senate nomination last week. Former State Senate President Miller left the state office to which he had been appointed by GOP Gov. Frank Murkowski to run against Murkowski's daughter, Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The 53-year-old Miller is considered to the right of Lisa Murkowski on cultural issues such as abortion and gun control.

The Switch Is Still On: The trend of conservative Democratic office-holders' switching to the GOP continues. In April, two Georgia state representatives announced they were switching from Democratic to Republican. In so doing, State Representatives. Tommy Smith, chairman of the House Planning and Community Affairs Committee, and Bob Lane, chairman of the Game, Fish, and Park Committee, increased GOP ranks in the Peach Tree House to 75 out of 180. Then, just two weeks ago, five-term Democratic State Rep. Carl Rogers, made the same political journey, raising the Republican number to 76. "The Republican Party is the fastest-growing family in Georgia," beamed House GOP Leader Glenn Richardson. http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3905

9. From PAGE 3: Partial-Birth Abortion Stands Trial

On November 5, President Bush signed a law banning partial-birth abortion. Immediately, Planned Parenthood, the National Abortion Federation, and local abortionists filed suit against the law in California, Nebraska and New York. Federal courts heard testimony in these cases. The establishment media ignored the truth that emerged. We've posted some telling excerpts from the testimony in these cases. Here's just a couple:

----------

ON SEEING THE HEART BEAT (Testimony of Dr. Maureen Paul, Planned Parenthood v. Ashcroft, 5/29/04)

Q: And when you begin the evacuation, is the fetus ever alive?
A: Yes.
Q: How do you know that?
A: Because I do many of my procedures especially at 16 weeks under an ultrasound guidance, so I will see a heartbeat.
Q: Do you pay attention to that while you are doing the abortion?
Answer: Not particularly. I just notice sometimes.

----------

DETAILS NOT RELEVANT (Testimony of Dr. Carolyn Westhoff, National Abortion Federation v. Ashcroft, 4/2/04)

Q: Do you tell her [the mother] that you are going to then, ultimately, suck the brain out of the skull?
A: In all of our D&Es the head is collapsed or crushed and the brains are definitely out of the skull but those are--
Q: Do you tell them that?
A: Those are details that would be distressing to my patients and would not--information about that is not directly relevant to their safety.
