Strange Disappearance of 100,000 American Millionaires

Last year, the number of American millionaires fell by 100,000. Yet 200,000 new millionaires showed up overseas. Why? Because hugely profitable investments are being hidden from you by a cartel of lawyers, regulators and Wall Street special interests. Like our recommended investments that gained 787% and 1,894% during the bear market and our other investments up 106%, 131% and 169%. Find out what they don't want you to know...

1. Two Cents: Kill Bill vs. Kill Jesus

Last week, after I had already prepared the Weekly Wrap-up, I read an interesting movie review on the Fox News website (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,116512,00.html). The review by Roger Friedman was on the new movie by Quentin Tarantino, "Kill Bill, Vol. 2," and contained nothing but praise for the flick. (For those of you unfamiliar with the "Kill Bill" movies, they are samurai-style films known for their violence and blood as much as their quality.)

But strangely enough (well, maybe not that strangely), reading Friedman's old stuff we find that his main complaint with Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" was its graphic violence and blood. So, after reading of his love for Tarantino and "Kill Bill, Vol. 2," I sent to Friedman an email. I thought y'all might enjoy it.

----------

Mr. Friedman,

I noted with interest your review of "Kill Bill, Vol. 2." What made the review of this movie interesting -- and your replay of praise for "Vol. 1" -- was not the actual good things you had to say about it, but, rather, reading it in light of what you wrote about "The Passion" (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,112427,00.html#2).

Here's what you penned on February 25, 2004:

"But the real problem with 'The Passion' is that it is graphic beyond belief, and unrelenting. How anyone will be able to sit through this thing is the real mystery. There is blood, blood, everywhere. The violence toward Jesus is sadistic and grotesque."

If the "real problem" with "The Passion" was the violence, would not that same characterization and "problem" hold true for at least "Kill Bill, Vol. 1," if not also "Vol. 2" (which I've yet to see)?

Or, were you hoping no one would remember your "excuse" for not liking "The Passion" - which was your supposed dislike for "graphic" and "unrelenting" violence.

In light of your comments about "The Passion," I also found it ironic (maybe just plain weird) that you closed your column on "Kill Bill, Vol. 2" with the words "Have a happy Easter."

Regards (and Happy Easter),
Chris Field

----------

Since then, I've dug up Mr. Friedman's review of "Kill Bill, Vol. 1" (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,98244,00.html). You might find it as interesting as I did, that this movie critic who was so worried about the violence of "The Passion" had this to say about Tarantino's first "Kill Bill" installment:

"...these were the impressions I was left with after the screening: that it rocked, that the violence and spurting blood was cartoon-like fun..."

I'm just guessing, but I'm not sure Mr. Friedman's problem with "The Passion" was actually the violence.

2. Headlines and Highlights from HUMAN EVENTS ONLINE:

"9/11 COMMISSION'S CREDIBILITY AT STAKE"

What went wrong? How can future attacks be prevented? These are the two burning questions that the congressional 9/11 Commission is tasked with answering. The commission's charge is important, to say the least, and their findings could be a most useful tool in better preparing America to fight the war on terror. However, recent actions by commission members are painting a partisan picture that could discredit the findings of the commission in the eyes of the intelligence community, and, more importantly, the American public.

"BACK IN IRAQ"

This week in a prime-time White House news conference, President Bush described recent fighting in Iraqi areas of ar-Ramadi and Fallujah as "tough." It is tough, war always is. But that's not to say progress isn't being made and those who are inciting the violence aren't being brought to justice - it is and they are. And it would be refreshing if just one member of the vaunted White House press corps or one television channel's chattering chumps would show a sliver of confidence in America's armed forces and their ability to defeat the terrorists with whom they are engaged in Iraq.

Will we ever see the headline "We Are Winning"? http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3616

"DON'T FORGET MISES -- AND DUMP THE THIRD WAY!"

The Third Way, or middle way, is said to combine the best elements of capitalism and socialism: a new synthesis for the Information age. Some people call it "economic opportunity and social justice." British Prime Minister Tony Blair, in an interview for Chinese TV, described the Third Way as "combining a dynamic market economy with a strong sense of social provision and national unity and purpose." He also calls it "social democracy renewed," a term used by many political leaders throughout the European Union. In the United States, the Democratic Leadership Council calls it "tolerant traditionalism." President Bush uses the term "compassionate conservatism."

The problem with this is that capitalism and socialism are irreconcilable. One relies on free, voluntary exchange; the other relies on bureaucratic control. You cannot combine the two.

"HOW MUCH IS TERRI SCHIAVO'S LIFE WORTH?"

The world has moved on since the case of Terri Schiavo, whose husband sought to remove the feeding tube that kept her alive, briefly grabbed public attention last fall. But Terri's life remains at risk. Michael Schiavo, her parents, the state of Florida, and advocacy groups continue to fight over her future. Alas, she keeps losing where it matters most, in court.

What is Terri's opinion? We may never know: http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3615

"EYING THE FBI"

As the 9/11 Commission shines its too-often-partisan beam on our intelligence agencies, most Americans will come to the view, if they haven't already, that the FBI completely dropped the ball in the month before the terrorist attacks.

Is the creation of a new terrorist-hunting and intelligence-gathering agency for the homefront the best next step in protecting America? http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3617

"KERRY NEEDS A NEW MANTRA"

Not that long ago, when Kerry and other Democrats had exhausted all their ammunition against President Bush's successful routing of Saddam Hussein, they began to complain ad nauseam that the president had alienated the international community by invading Iraq "unilaterally." Well, their criticism was off base and disingenuous -- because President Bush had earnestly tried for months on end to build a larger coalition. But you can't force appeasing and corrupt nations to go to war. Besides, we did in fact have a significant coalition as it was.

Now Kerry says the situation in Iraq is "one of the greatest failures of diplomacy and failures of judgment that I have seen in all the time that I've been in public life."

What does diplomacy have to do with the murderers in Fallujah or the sadistic, maniacal hitmen of Moktada al-Sadr? Is Kerry suggesting that if we had just organized a bigger international coalition we wouldn't be facing this post-war terrorist unrest? Or is he just talking to hear his head rattle? http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3618

4. Jihad Watch: Here's to the State of Mississippi

Friends and relatives of Thomas Hamill, the Mississippi civilian kidnapped in Iraq, gathered together on Easter Sunday to pray and express their love for him. Americans of a certain age might have looked twice at the photos of the crowd outside Mississippi's Noxubee County Courthouse: it was racially mixed.

It's almost fifty years now since the murder in Mississippi of 14-year-old Emmett Till, killed by white men for talking to a white woman. In the 1960s the murders of Medgar Evers and three voting rights activists from the North made Mississippi seem even to other Americans like a dangerous, foreign place. It may have been more realistic in 1963 to imagine blacks enjoying full equality with whites on the moon than in Mississippi. Bashing Mississippi became de rigueur for the legions of then-fashionable folk-protest singers.

But government sanctioned segregation is long gone. Justice prevailed in Mississippi because most Mississippians supported core American values: they took seriously the realities of living in "one nation, under God with liberty and justice for all."

Will we really be able to do the same thing in the Iraq where Thomas Hamill is held captive today -- overcome deeply ingrained hatreds and establish a viable government that guarantees equality of rights for all its citizens, including women and non-Muslim minorities who are denied so many rights by Islamic Sharia law?

5. Political Roundup

EVANS & NOVAK: Here's what Bob Novak had to say about the 9/11 Commission and Condoleezza Rice's appearance. "With National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice testifying last week, Democrats may start regretting what they've wished for. The commission charged with investigating intelligence failures leading up to the September 11 terrorist attacks appears to be helplessly overrun by election-year politics. In the political wrangling, however, Bush may have gained the upper hand. The ongoing uproar about whether Rice would testify publicly has had far more to do with political maneuvering than information gathering. Democratic commission members had been calling on Rice to testify publicly, before television cameras and under oath. Rice had already testified, but behind closed doors. The demand that she testify publicly was made as a political maneuver to make it appear that the Bush White House was covering something up. Democrats did not expect Bush would actually agree to have his advisor go public. The decision to allow Rice to testify was, in turn, a political one, as well. Rice is a very eloquent and intelligent woman. As a prominent black woman in a position of grave importance, Rice provided good public relations with black voters. Also, the move allowed Bush to respond to attacks by his Democrats on his security record by saying that Rice addressed all criticism in the public hearings. The hope of an independent, honest inquiry, free of politics, is gone." http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3622

6. Liberal Bias: The Media Deny It, But What About...

Are the members of Big Media still liberally biased? According them, no, they never have been. But the empirical evidence suggests otherwise. Their treatment of the Bush press conference and the Gorelick memo betray their cries of impartiality.

Let's take a quick peek at these two recent events: http://www.HumanEventsOnline.com/article.php?id=3612
